The K-series is non-type R engines are different to the older ones.

From this gen it was no longer 0-5whateverK then engage secondary lobe profile then scream to 9k. I'd have to read again on the K24A3 but i believe it only has VTEC on the intake side, instead of intake and exhaust like type-Rs, and it's not really fro performance, its for general usability, to put it simply.

VTEC doesn't mean "high performance", it's just Honda's implementation of variable valve timing and lift.
There are plenty of technical papers released by Honda if you want to read more.

Ok, first of all, forget torque, power is ALL that matters, anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't understand.

Give me a car with more torque over power any day.
Seriously? Any Aston/Ferrari/Lambo/Zonda/911/any M car and any RS Audi + Nissan GTR and just about every iconic super/hyper/performance car ever, all have more power than torque?
In what way "more"? Or "less" come to think of it.
lb/ft vs. BHP? As an example: he says he prefers 445lb/ft with say 313bhp to 295 lb/ft and 420hp.

But you must have understood that?

Both good cars and both worth trying. I don't think the Saab post re-map will have a drastically different power delivery, just more of everything. I would be surprised if the remap made it more economical but I don't think the difference in fuel economy would be much at all. So more power and torque and similar fuel economy, what's not to like?

Sorry to be contrary but in my experience, the Saab will "feel" quicker and probably be easier to make quick progress in, as you probably have the ability to overtake in 4th or 5th without too many revs, whilst you would need to change down to 3rd and rev the Honda to get a similar rate of acceleration.

That being said, the Honda will have the nicer engine. Like a diesel, the Saab will get the job done without much character, whereas Honda VTEC engines sound nice for 4-pots and love to be revved. Probably more satisfying on a hoon, as their manual gearboxes are generally really good too (I have a 1.8 VTEC Civic, 143bhp). I rarely need to use more than 4000rpm in daily driving though and I'm not exactly holding people up.

I would get the Saab but that's because I've never had one and fancy trying something different before they get too old but as others have said, the Honda has a cracking engine and will probably be more reliable (if a little old mannish).

Try both and buy the one you prefer driving, not the one that looks better on paper. I did a similar thing before buying my Civic and on paper the Hyundai i30 was better in most respects but to drive there was no contest and the Hyundai despite being a very good car did nothing for me on an emotional level. smile
