Looks OK for a bit of cheap waftiness. Main argument against is that for £800ish more you could probably get one with 70k less miles and without a dent in the door.

Post-2002 S-Type's drive very well - the just replaced XF has much the same chassis.

It's not mandatory to take a picture of your own car outside your own house. Last time I sold one of mine, indeed, I took the pics round in the next street where they recycle properly and all that.

Love the fact that few on here like this shed; makes it all the cheaper for whoever buys it...

Why would it go bang? (Genuine question - the 4.2 V8 is pretty much bomb proof and the ZF 6HP26 gearbox is extremely reliable too. They can wear rear wishbone bushes if driven hard, and can get some corrosion in wiring behind the front bumper but otherwise these cars are solid)

I had S-Type 4.2 V8 SE for over 10 years. Bought with 14 miles on the clock as a demo car and sold with over 130,000. It was Jaguar Racing Green. Having had it that long you can rightly assume I really liked this car. It never let me down but it did have gearbox issues all dealt with under warranty. I came to the conclusion that as far as S-Types are concerned this is the one to have rather than the supercharged version or diesel: decent performance, unstressed engine, very comfortable, would perform when asked etc.

Interesting to see from among some of the earlier comments that all the regular mis-information about the S-Type is still being touted!

This shed has a leaper on the bonnet, ugh! This tells us more about the owner than anything else. For the price I think it's likely to be a good buy.

I now have an XF 5.0 V8 Portfolio (not supercharged) which is a significant improvement on the S-Type, although the ride is less Jaguar-like.

Hmmm... It may be a V8 for under a grand, but it's got relatively galactic miles.

One owner maybe, but it might be one of those old guys (like my dear old Dad) who runs it until it's shagged and then sells it on. If I could get past the god-awful looks and Fiesta parts bin switchgear I'd want a good look at the service history.

This is 5 out of 10. We've seen worse though.

I had a 2.7d for a while it was a lovely car to drive I wish I had gone for the S Type R at some point but the V8 version is a cracking car for the money. I wonder how many people who dont like it have ever driven an S type. Not the best Car in the world but as a big cruiser its a fine motor.

1999 - 2001 had Ford switchgear. 2002 onwards is good quality stuff. The buttons for example are soft press things, not cheap "clicky" things like contemporary BMWs had.

Mondeo I think? I'll ask my father-in-law. He's owned a fair few Jags but struggles to find anything nice to say about these.

For some reason I've always liked them.rolleyes

I have scanned the classifieds a few times but my man maths skills obviously need improving as I've never got further than that.

Still, if I ever did I would hope to find one in a better colour combination and with less miles even at this sort of price.

Very much this. It's already got a growler on the bonnet, what more do you want?
I had a 3.0 for a while - super comfortable, but not without it's issues. I moved it on before it kicked me in the nuts and stole all my money. If you buy - check the boot seal as the article says. Mine was like a mobile swimming pool. Not only is the battery in the boot, but lots of ECUs as well. In just the right place to get a soaking...

To me, this isn't a 'proper Jag' - nor is the Mondeo-based X Type.

However, the 4.2 litre V8 is a gem of an engine and would make this a good little sleeper.

How so?

My x300 has a leaper fitted at some point during its life, but it's a one owner car that was clearly extremely well cared for and not messed around with in any other way. The chap just had a taste by pass one day.

I hated the interior of the early ones with the very American looking steering wheel and "Urinal" centre console, but I love these. I love the thought of it cocooning me home. Don't care if the interior is small, I'm only 5'10" so not huge. Can I justify a V8 daily...

No, X-Type was Mondeo.

No (and the X-Type connection to the Mondeo is tenuous - with the front strut towers being the only panels unchanged and a different wheelbase and track compared to the Mondeo, but don't let fact get in the way of misinformation).

The S-Type started life using Lincoln LS floor pan and some suspension and steering components as well as either the Ford 5R55N auto box, Ford manual gearbox (both V6s) or ZF 5 speed for 4.0 V8s. This was the 1999 model. It drove like crap though, so it received an extensive mechanical re-engineering for 2002 onwards with virtually no parts compatibility between <2002 and >2002, let alone >2002 and Lincoln LS. Post 2002 S-Types also received a completely redesigned interior.

Even the V6s were only Ford short blocks. The heads used the Mazda castings from the Duratec V6 family but machined to Jaguar specifications. Amongst chances to Ford spec V6s the Jaguar ones had different valve port geometry, introduced inlet cam variable valve timing, dumped the hydraulic lifters in favour of direct acting mechanical buckets (solid tappets) and had new manifolds designed. That's why the Jaguar V6s have far healthier torque and power curves compared to Ford V6s of the same capacity. They were built in Ford's engine plants alongside the Ford engines however, which is Ford enough for the misinformed - despite the Jag V6s producing more power than contemporary BMW I6s of the same capacity.

Totally agree - some really pointless and unjustified comments within these forums!

Most XJs (apart from the 350 and latest model) suit wearing the leaper on the bonnet. And that has never detracted me from buying one or judging the previous owner...

A friend of mine had one of these that he bought for shed money. It has been largely reliable apart from a few sensors that were a bit of a pig to change due to restricted access at the back of the engine.

He also fitted much louder exhausts which are completely out of character for the car but do make it sound fantastic.

Following my comment about the really early ones, they seem to be falling into the realm of elderly chav, and his mate, magpie barry. Now, baz is well chuffed he's got a Jag to show off at the working man's club, but this hasn't stopped him putting chrome tat all over it including a number plate surround, and a poorly stuck on V6 badge from Halfords. The number plate also probably says "BAZ". Baz doesn't care that his centre console looks like a public convenience, because he has a Jag.
