Am I the only one hoping never to fly on a Boeing part built by the bloke who doesn't know where to buy his tools?
Probably. There's probably genius mechanics out there who are bordering on autistic spectrum, don't have friends and are scared of the Internet.

Anyone else feel slightly uneasy about an aircraft engineer saying he's struggling to find decent tools?

It makes me think of some of my plumbing bodge jobs where I used the wrong tools and rounded off plastic basin backnuts.

eek

I am frankly stunned that your company aren't helping you with this.

Unless they are mad or keen to go out of business, they should be very interested in what tools you use.

A cheap socket shattering into 4 pieces for example could ground a plane for days while you retrieve the bits.
Quality control springs to mind too.

Don't forget they should be cadmium free.

ETA. You may also find that some tools are so specialised that they are only made by Snap-on or maybe stahlwille.
The copyright on the tools design may be held by the product manufacturer too.

How does that work, what with them being French to a significant extent?

In my opinion, these are currently the best tools money can buy.

Check out the Joker range of spanners and the Zyklop Speed ratchets.

Ask everyone at work where they get their tools, someone might be able to help you out. People retire or leave the industry all the time.

Halfords Pro do a set of A/F spanners 3/8 to 3/4 which are really good as a starter. Their tool boxes are ok, in fact there is a deal on this weekend for top box and cabinet.

I.m.h.o. buy the best you can afford in sockets and spanners below 9/16, it will save your knuckles and last a lifetime. Also duck bills, snips, ratchet spanners anything you will be using daily. The quality of the bigger stuff is much better across a wider range of less expensive brands. My non branded wire locking pliers are still going after 20 years.
