The 1999 Hyundai Accent is still on sale now (new) in Egypt, except it's called the Hyundai Verna over there. Most (probably 85% plus) taxi's are these, well certainly in Cairo anyway. My missus (who is Egyptian) explained to me that the government gave taxi drivers heavy discounts on these in order to get them to ditch the previous taxi staple over there which was the Fiat Sahin / Dogan which are based on the Fiat 131 all the way back to the early 1970's! According to the Wiki page for the Sahin /Dogan, these were still made in Egypt until 2009! yikes. You still see a few of these old taxi's but my god are they in a bad state.

Here is a link for your shiny new 1999 Hyundai laugh

I think the CitiGolf has only recently stopped being made, Mk2 Golf body but loads of weird things inside, much newer dashes shoehorned in etc.
It was a Mk I Golf with a later Polo dashboard and a Lupo 3L steering wheel:

Picture of a more recent model, the red one looks more like an 80's model year.

Not quite the same as these old cars they still sell in developing economies but this

is about to enter it's 18th year of production. My incredibly prissy Hyacinth Bucket neighbours have a brand new one with a "one life, live it" sticker in it and use it to go to the shops. I understand they are tough little things to hammer around but they mostly seem to exist in the UK as a "lifestyle" 4x4 for the terminally stupid.

I was going to say this. Quite a few farmers in Ireland seem to like these. I guess its mainly down to being a cheap to buy, but pretty tough with 4wd.

Id imagine there would be a huge amount of red tape to overcome if someone set up a business importing these into the UK.

They are already RHD but I guess emissions and passive safety may be obstacles. The firms that imported Vw Vans and Beetles managed it.

I could see a market for them if not too pricey. 40-somethings who wanted ones as teenagers. 50 somethings who had them back in the 1980s. Then there's the Dub Scene. A huge after sales market in engine mods, suspension, wheels and trinkets.

In Central and South America, you can still buy a version of the 1990 Nissan Sunny called the Tsuru.

The locals love them as they are tough, simple and cheap to run, just dont crash it
