I've a feeling they still make the Maestro and/or Montego somewhere.

Id imagine there would be a huge amount of red tape to overcome if someone set up a business importing these into the UK.
There isn't really a market for Citi Golfs in the UK as they are only made in 5 door which limits the appeal

China is a goldmine for this stuff.

Until 2013, they made the made the VW Jetta in China.

Not sure if this is still made, but the Peugeout 206 went to China as a Citroen C2.

A whole load of 90s Citroens and Peugeots are or were recently sold there with updated front and rear ends.
Yes - loads of VW Santana, Audi 100 and Citroen ZX taxis out there. The mk1 SEAT Toledo seems popular too. Don't know if any of those are still made, but they certainly were until recently.

Wasn't there a Chinese company mating the front end of the Montego to the A-pillar of the Maestro?

I'm not entirely sure what the benefit of that was

I think there is a market, but you're right that that takes some of the appeal

I didn't know they were around until 2001 though. Are there any 51 plate Maestros still out there?

I would guess there are maybe half a dozen or so in UK already, I've seen three in the metal plus a few pics on the mk1 owners club.

The fit/finish even when using 40 year old tooling is not bad, the interiors are far superior but for me too many doors. I'd sooner find a uk/euro sourced 1.1/1.3 non sunroof if I were to have another.

Ford manufacture and sell the old discontinued (in Europe) Focus in China. They sell it alongside the latest models but label it the 'classic'. Looked lovely all brand new and polished at the Shanghai Motor Show.

Yes, the Maestro was made by a company in Ledbury UK which continued producing them by using the old Rover tooling/stash of parts. There are a few around the Forest of Dean on X & Y plates plus this on a 51 plate.

I think the CitiGolf has only recently stopped being made, Mk2 Golf body but loads of weird things inside, much newer dashes shoehorned in etc.
I thought the CitiGolf was more or less the Mk1 body? It stopped a few years ago; I recall reading about the anniversary editions they were planning.
