No idea about back the day but recent ones are definitively SUVs

Calling it an estate is Humpty Dumpty stuff!

Seen that before. Also seen other SUVs that are capable around a track. Still an SUV.

Fair enough chap if that's what you think. Calling it an estate is Humpty Dumpty stuff!
However as mentioned above its a slightly taller large capacity impreza in talk life. Save for suspension parts the underpinnings are almost entirely interchangeable.
Either way, with awd, a very capable chassis, the same power and torque and 220kg lighter, I'd be a liar if I didn't derive a tiny but of satisfaction in maintaining my point that a 545 wouldn't see which direction.... But then if we're playing dismissive statement, then it's not hard to be faster than a lumbering fat hearse.

Is there a good reason that a car cannot be fitted with a turbo 'isolator' switch?
We run a Forester XT. My wife loves it to drive, but is not a quick driver. I love the fact that it is quick, but I don't drive it often. The fuel consumption is fairly horrific for the size of car and it occurs to me that if it was a non-turbo we would save on fuel. Is there a reason why the turbo could not be used on demand rather than constantly (yep - I know there is such a thing as throttle control, but a big button marked 'Turbo Boost' would be cool!).
It's a 2.something AWD car with the aerodynamics of a housebrick. The turbo makes the car more efficient but you're never going to get 'good' mpg from one of them. The boost pressure will be related to the amount of pedal use so technically it's already doing what you wanted. At full throttle you'll get more boost than at 1/4 down. If you want to save fuel, accelerate gently, change up earlier, dont pink it, turn the air con off, set the tyre pressures correctly and service it on time. We run a Forester XT. I think anything in the 20's to the gallon is probably pretty good going

Suburu's website described it as a capable and spacious family SUV.
Sport Utility Vehicle - an American phrase that makes no sense when you see the slow, heavy vehicles to which it's usually applied. In this case it's fairly accurate.
If only you could trust manufacturers websites - do BMW still try to claim "Ultimate Driving Machine"

I think so! Even for that abomination 2 AT MPV thing, presumably. In this case it's fairly accurate.

It's quite simple really.
If your engine has extra grunt, you will use it - even if you don't realise it.
For example, you may think that you're accelerating gently, but you're still accelerating quicker than you would have had you less power, and so using more fuel.
And even doing what you think is a steady motorway speed, you're actually spending a lot of time speeding up and slowing down.

My Impreza has a custom ECU (Alcatek) and has switchable maps with high boost and low boost and anti-lag/launch control. The maps are selectable in the car.
Low boost seems to improve fuel economy quite a lot although I've never done a scientific test (it spends 95% of its time in high boost unless I can't get 99 fuel).

Suburu's website described it as a capable and spacious family SUV. I don't know why it's impossible for people to accept that a duck is a duck. It might be a fast duck, but it's still a duck!
PR guff may do, but the fact remains that it IS an Impreza high capacity estate. Its an Impreza platform with a larger estate body. Why will you not be told?Look at the dashboards - the facelifted GC8 dash is actually a Forester dash.
The dash? It fits because the Forester is a GF8 Impreza with a higher roof and a new frock. Underneath its an Impreza and the dashboard is fitted to the bulkhead. Its much more than a shared platform.
My issue with ORD is that he is arguing whilst having no idea what he is talking about.

Surely owners and drivers of these things cannot know what we're talking about - its the 40mm (25mm STI) of extra suspension and the estate body that's confusing. My issue with ORD is that he is arguing whilst having no idea what he is talking about.
I think though, he's mostly upset because he drives a slow fire engine, no wait, errm, pickup, hang on that's not it either... I've forgotten how to car enthusiast.

I said it's an SUV. It is. That much is simple fact.My issue with ORD is that he is arguing whilst having no idea what he is talking about.
I said it is soft. That's a matter of opinion, but I have googled for reviews and see that Autocar agrees with me. I couldn't tell it apart from any other SUV, to be honest. High, wallowy, etc. It didn't feel like a modified rally rep!
You can get your knickers in a twist if you like and throw insults about.
Platform sharing is the norm for cars these days. By your reasoning, most VAG cars are essentially the same.

They're not all the same type of car, though - the Tiguan, Touran, Q3, Yeti and Altea are all on the same platform as the Golf. Whether the Forester is an SUV or not, you certainly could put an SUV body on an Impreza floorpan and running gear - would that not be an SUV?
I have already agreed that personally I think a Forester fits the definition of SUV - I just think the majority of what are called SUVs aren't remotely "Sport"I'd call the pre 09 Forester a jacked up estate so calling it an SUV is a step up IMO.
Would I think it faster than a V8 5 Series BMW - it would depend upon the cars, the drivers and the road - but mine on a B road. Yes.
In the rain or snow on an A road - Yes
On a dry A road in a std XT - No
Hardly the point though - I bought mine to get the family and dog around the country lanes (where I live) in all weathers - for that it's the best tool for the job.
