My 2005 Focus 2.0TDCI provides quite a lot of bang for it's buck. The torque from 1.5 thou rpm gives much more powerful machinery a scare regularly.

OK we get the picture, but everyone knows you can get a 2nd hand whatever, so this is about new cars. Pointing out the obvious is not needed, or actually looks as though it is needed wink

Unusual user. Uses odd words like 'thou'.

- Made an account Nov 11th
- Makes 1 topic Nov 19th but never replies to it.
- Makes another topic today...

In the last topic his skyline was written off so I guess he bought a new one for the 20 'thou' budget he had.

The new Focus RS will provide an awful lot of bang for buck, as will the V8 Mustang....
Fingers crossed they both depreciate like a stone! They are Fords afterall....
The previous Focus RS had remarkable residuals. If I kept the one I had back in 2010 with sensible mileage it would still be worth £20k, I only paid £24,500 for it eek
True, although I think that's partly down to some dealerships/traders holding the prices up as well. The MK2 was also a limited run, whereas the Mustang and MK3 RS aren't.

I must be missing something here as there are a lot of replies to the original post, which to me made about as much sense as mandarin.

It must be an age thing?

Mainly all the fast Ford / Cosworth nuts ruining it for the rest of us I reckon. Shame but maybe I should play them at their own game rather than moaning! Chance to buy mk1 Focus RS at reasonable money was 5yrs ago. Now I quite fancy one.

Are we talking about bearing shell oil clearances or what?

TVRs are a good way of getting a lot of performance for attractive outlays though if that's the OP's drift.

There are any number of ways of getting a fast car on the cheap. All depends on the risk you are happy to take and the potential upkeep costs if things go wrong.
Skylines are right up there, £25K for a good one and another £10K will see the thing chucking out 750 bhp. An early Evo 8 for £9,000 has to be a bargain, again easily tuneable, an early TVR perhaps?
New cars cost quite a lot but you get a lot, so get one 2 years old and you are looking at real value in many cases.
Volvo S60R and a remap to 360 bhp ain't a bad shout.

Has anyone got a car in excellent shape with big go for not much dough? I still say my skyline is the best value fast car but what have you got that you're really happy with that's quick?
For £35k plus £5k on mods, (if that's not too much for your VFM guidelines), I have got a car:-
With almost 90 bhp more than a Ferrari F40, yet is docile when needed.
That sounds fantastic from idle to the 7,000 rpm redline.
Which even in my average-driver hands has gone under 8 minutes at The Ring and did a 7-47 with a mate driving it.
Which will top 200 mph in the right conditions.
Makes 60 mph in under 4 seconds and 100 mph in less than 8 seconds.
That looks fantastic from some angles, not at all bad from others.
Which will tune to 1,000 bhp relatively easily and reliably.
That is not losing any value at all as time goes on.
Has a big boot and a comfy interior.
Yeah, you could say I am happy with it, as it cost less than a new A45AMG.

I might be mistaken but EP3 Type-R (2001-2006) was ~£17k OTR. FN2 Type-R (released in 2007-2012) was I think similar.

That's some distance away from £30k for the new one.
