I agree, homologation specials don't count as hot hatches IMO
That seems a sweeping judgement wink

biggrin True! I was actually debating the Mk2 Golf Limited as I wrote that statement, but 4WD made me carry on. Nice S1, and I agree that is a hot hatch

I shall amend my previous declaration to "4WD homologation specials don't count" smile

I'd vote Escort Cossie.

Best i've owned was the R26 megane - did everything, for pennies, but never really caught on tbh. Shame, cos they're a great piece of kit.

Worst i've owned was the clio trophy - way too much hype, and not particularly hot either.

I voted EP3 Type R.
Sublime engine and gearbox, affordable to the masses, fantastic build quality and surely a future classic.

Best all rounder HH. Golf R. No question.

Best raw hatch. Megane R26R.

Best very lightweight and still powerful hatch. Cooper S Works Gen 1.

Leftfield choices. Charade GTI. Escort Cosworth 227 bhp version.

Looks like a Haymarket marketing scam. Can't we just vote for fun instead of filling out address details.....
Agreed!

And where's the Puma 1.7? Or is that too much of a coupe?
A serious giant-killer on any road with bends and not too many long straights.

I'm biased and love the Italian stuff so I'd vote for Lancia Delta Integrale.

I also love the Fiat Strada Abarth 130TC although, for me, the R5 GT Turbo, Peugeot 205GTI and Golf GTI Mk1 are up there also.

Integrale. Always has been, always will be. Followed by the 205 GTI, R5 Turbo, Alfasud Ti and Civic EK9 (though I preferred the EG6).

Lancia Delta is the hottest hatch of all time, it will never be bettered.

Mk.3 Clio 200 seems to be missing? That list is cobblers.

If a Simca 1100 qualifies as a hot hatch: what is this then?

With the R4 being the 1st hatchback and the 3rd doors getting more slanted by time I really wonder how strict the definition really is. wikipedia says the Fairlady Z was Japans 1st hatchback... Puzzled, really puzzled.

They're a bit dull though to be crowned best hot hatch, surely?

The cars I'd pick aren't there, and I don't want Landfails.

you sometimes get the feeling some of these vote casting invites are set ups just so a few people can say "Golf R".....again. As soon as you see an R in the first line up before voting starts you know straight away itll figure high up in the rankings almost like the writers worship the bloody thing and find any excuse to spew more hyperbole about it. About the only common thing it shares with one of the original hot hatches is the name and the badge. The R is not a hot hatch in the true sense of the word it is more akin to one of the old skool rally bred specials like the evo and impreza and certainly in at the very least the next category up above your common or garden front driven HH. lets not muddy the waters by competing a 4wd 300ps (and probably skill less DSG at that) modern day VAG product with one of the original forefathers......p-lease. there. youve bin told.

There is a 205, they just list it as the 1.6 GTi, which upset those who prefer the 1.9.

The rest of your post is very much valid however.

I went thru most of them in the 80s and the 309GTi was the pick of the bunch. Can't comment on later eras, as sadly, I grew up.
