I agree, I always take these kinds of questions to mean "fresh out the box, or close enough".

On that basis, an 8v Mk4 Golf is certainly a strong candidate for my vote.
For some reason, when I read this I interpreted it as your suggestion that the 2.0 8V Golf GTI has improved with time laugh

In response to the best hot hatch ever thread.

This is bottom of the hot hatch pile for me:

Terrible weezy 8v engine, poor to drive and questionable reliability and build quality.
+1 just because some people think they're a good 'hot hatch'. Particularly the MKIV 2.0 'GTi'- a crappy soggy pudding of a car.

Clio V6 from what I have heard.

Rover 200 Vi, great engine but the handling was a joke.

To call the Golf gti 2.0 mk4 a hot hatch is an insult.

Whenever I see it mentioned it reminds me of old Top gear

I had a 200vi. Sold it when I was out handled by a mk4 golf gti. Went back to a 306 S16.

At least the mk4 had a nice interior. The mk3 was fat, slow and had the dullest interior i have ever sat in. Even lada interiors had a bit of character, the mk3 golf interior had no redeeming features.
I take issue with that. I had a colour concept MK3 and the interior was fab.

How can that be considered a hot hatch?!

The Rover VI handled badly? When the 25 was released it used the VI suspension components and settings and the press lapped it up.

Citroen Visa GTi

I love Citroens, but the Visa was a horrible poverty spec 2CV replacement and whilst the Peugeot GTi driveline was spirited, it couldn't break free from its horribly humble roots.

I always thought the 1st gen Civic Type S just looked like a special edition trim... I've never driven one, so can't comment properly, I'm basing it purely on looks.

That's exactly what it is though.

Maybe Rover gave the press doctored cars like the MG maestro turbo's !

Lightweight Cherry body with a perky Alfasud boxer engine. Launched before the 'hot hatch' thing had really gathered pace, but not a bad car to drive.

How many people deriding, belittling and mocking have ever even seen one, let alone driven one? It WAS a hot hatchback, even if it wasn't pushed as a 'hot hatch'.

On paper it was a good idea, the Alfa Sud Ti was a fantastic handling rorty hatchback, twin carbs, revvy boxer engine, sporty to look at, great seats, fun to drive but suffered from rust and poor build.

The idea was put the running gear in a Nissan shell and create a new hot hatch.

I had one briefly after various Suds and sprints and 33's I took a Cherry Europe Gti in p/x .
It had all the bits from an Alfa Sud Ti - engine, gearbox, seats, exhaust, steering wheel, indicator stalks, wheels etc.

But the Cherry chassis had none of the ability of the Alfa Sud so it was just an unreliable Nissan that no one wanted - they were great value when they were a couple of years old but not a hot hatch.

Fiesta XR2i with the 1.6 CVH.

Not very hot and not very good.

Owned one.

Did Ford improve it with the 1.8 Zetec engine ?

Good nomination. People seem to like them again now though

I've just thought - whilst the mk2 Astra GTE 16V with the 20XE and C20XE engine was pretty good, the base 1.8 GTE wasn't brilliant

I had a Mk2 and it was definitely better. Of course, I wanted a 205GTi, but couldn't quite stretch to one...

I had an XR2i 16v, I loved it. I remember fitting dual ARB's on the rear which made it nice and playful. Didn't have huge power but felt torquey as hell in such a light body.

I nearly bought a XR2 MK2 when they had just come out but there was some hold up and my order was cancelled.

Agree the earlier MK2 carb car was way better than the MK3 injection.

I also owned a MK3 1.6S,not even luke warm but didn't expect it to be hot.
