Fastest you can go for £3500
Discussion
Just wondering what might be available with a budget of £3500 maybe £4000 tops?
Not bothered about fuel consumption but it must be something that's going to be reliable. Doesn't need to have 4 doors but 2 little seats in the back may come in handy.
ETA: It will be a daily driver and anything with a 0-60 time of under 7 seconds is acceptable.
Rx8s seem to be very good value for money and the Leon Cupra R suggestion was one I hadn't considered.

Classic impreza sti
for top speed get an sti, for acceleration get an sti-ra
Youll undoubtedly find something with a higher top speed but you're very unlikely to find something that will reach it as readily.
Go for an RA actually, forget the fat version.

I'd love an Impreza but I feel like the originals are looking a bit dated now. Plus I'd be terrified of reliability issues; original, well maintained, unmolested ones seem very few and far between. for top speed get an sti, for acceleration get an sti-ra

Let's add a maximum age of 12 years old. Yeah I know I'm being picky but I have about £3500 in the kitty and I'm curious what fast car I could get.
I've seen a few 330s and the Mondeo St220 for the budget, as long as it has a 0-60 time less then 7 seconds then I'd be happy. Less than 6 seconds and I'd be ecstatic.
ETA: RX8s seem to be very good value for money. They're my top contender at the moment.

Have to agree on Saab. Get a 9-5 aero for less than £1000 and spend the rest on an engine overhaul to include a sump drop and flush, head gasket (or at least new head bolts*) and a new DI cassette and then stage 3+ tune. Engine work probably about a grand and Maptun stage 3 £1200 last time I looked.
You'll have a very quick, comfortable barge for shed money and should be able to get between 295 (stage 3) and 347hp (stage 5) quite easily.

- The head isn't normally a problem but the engine harmonics can cause the bolts to loosen up over time. Re-torquing them doesn't work IME and it'd be better to just change the gasket and bolts and be done with it.
I think my MNR must be in with a shout for the fastest car in that budget...300bhp/tonne for £3750 if you can entirely forego all practicality You'd be lucky to get one for double that in reality though unless you're handy with the spanners.
When you say "fastest" do you mean all round performance or just straight line speed? Very different answers depending on which it is.

^None of the above.
After a fair bit of experience I have just had the shock of my year after sampling a 4.0 XKR. I had no hopes for it. What a surprise.
Absurd torque at any rpm, no lag, and a massive top end.
Easily accessed with a quick Mercedes 5-speed auto, never be in the wrong gear, no need to bother with that gear thing.
Even the TC was a help rather than a hinderance (possible LSD?)
Everything without forced induction feels lame afterwards.
