Barge. 4.0 V8, getting on for 300bhp, all leather all electric everything, Jaguar badge, will cost you a couple of hundred quid to insure. To go along the hot hatch route and all you're doing is paying to recarpet the insurance company MD's holiday home in Spain.
Just nonsense.

I had exactly the same car when I was 18 until I was 22. I bought a Z4 when I qualified as a treat to myself.
Keep the Punto and treat yourself to some single seater sessions on tracks if you want to have some fun blasting around at speed.

At 18 sadly you are a liability and likely to crash - it's only when you get a bit older you realise this with a bit of hindsight.

Also, Puntos are great.

306 GTi-6.

On the basis that mine (purchased last week) cost £700 and its insurance was hundreds of pounds a year cheaper than, say, a 1.4 Astra or Fiesta. I'm a relatively new driver (2 years) with no NCB.

Probably something like this, Volkswagen Golf 2.0 FSI GT
Quite sporty in a 3 door, full leather so plenty of luxuries, big step from the Punto in ride comfort. Good performance and only just cracked the 100k so a bit more life left in it yet.

Ignore me though, im old and boring

edit: If the insurance is too much, look at the 1.6

And if you crash, you're dead.

Diesel always saved me a bundle on my first cars. Was able to get a 1.9 Fiat GP for sub £1,200 premium with 1 years NCB and later moved on to a Civic Type S GT 2.2 for sub £800 premium with 3 years NCB in central London - both cheaper to insure than their petrol-powered trim equivalents at the time of purchase.

Seeing as you're unlikely to get anything of any serious power, the torque of a turbo diesel substitutes the lack of power for the sensation of speed! wink

Something that 18 year olds do not drive, think Jaguar, S-Class Merc's, older classics ... think outside the box, I would assume Range Rover is cheaper too.

I did not realise this until I was a bit older, my Astra VXR cost £250 more than my E9x 330i, even though the BMw was worth three times as much .... All about statistics!

The 306 wasn't bad for a late 90's small family car. Nothing special, but not bad. Not like an AX or 106.

Was given 3 out of 5 stars in 1997.

It does seem to fare better than the Citroen Xantia of the same era

Compared to a modern French car

All were much cheaper for me to insure under £1200 mostly around £700~ than any soul destroying economy box. The rate at which your age bracket crashes the car plays a big factor in premiums not just the group rating.

What a beautifully constructed argument.

What's your issue with the suggestion? Bearing in mind it comes from first hand experience on my part.

This reminded me of a friend that passed his test around 87 ..... Had a st box newish skoda as a first car.
Oh how we all took the p!s$ out of him. He plodded around in it for 2.5 / 3 years. Then one day turned up in a brand new RS turbo ......

Unknown to us he was gaining experience and saving his money, he never drove when we went out as we didn't want to be seen in the shed.

The day he turned up in that, he was the one laughing.

Save your money keep your head down and in a few years you could be in a very smart car.

Perhaps the rules have changed, as I've been helping my 17 yr old nephew look for a car.Insurance costs - Econo boxes are c £1200, 1.8i celica £2k, things in the list above £5k+

With a 3k budget I'm guessing it needs to be relatively cheap to run & insure then.
I would be looking at panda 100hp, twingo 133, swift sport or Mini Cooper.
A couple more years no claims under your belt then I would be looking at a Clio200 which will start around 5k in a couple of years.
