Otolith, I'm equally bored with repeating that the Jag (or any other car of that type) suggestion comes from personal experience. At 18, I chopped a Corsa for an XJ and got a four-figure insurance rebate.
Really? Recently? Maybe the OP can get a quote for a Jag and get back to us then. If an 18 year old can really get insurance for anything for £250 quid, I am absolutely amazed.

£250 is 1/3 the average uk premium and 15% of the average uk 17-22 year old.

I had a 90 bhp diesel focus at 17 and like you I wanted faster.

Bought my 83 cherry turbo for under £1500, running close to 170bhp, kept with with a astra vxr to 80ish.

£1600 to insure with mods declared I believe. Compared to the focus which would of been £1400 it was a no brainer. Would shoot flames on gear changes, dump valve noise too smile

At 19 just after I got 6 points for speeding I got a e46 320ci for £800 a year. At 20 a Range Rover td6 for £800.

All of this is legit insurance before people shout and scream that ive been fronting as there is no way it can be this cheap. Good postcode + parents on policy as named drivers.

Chris, I'm bored with trying to make you see the point of the OP and where it differs from your continued insistence that his car must be "cool".

Otolith, I'm equally bored with repeating that the Jag (or any other car of that type) suggestion comes from personal experience. At 18, I chopped a Corsa for an XJ and got a four-figure insurance rebate.

This is becoming a chore, I shall bow out and leave the OP to sort the wheat from the chaff as he sees fit.
You got lucky or there was a glitch in the system (I know these can happen, so fair play) - but your experience isn't the norm.
My Son is 18, and I would love to get him a barge to replace his Fiesta - but you simply cannot insure anything for £250 as you quoted.
His 125cc moped costs £350!!

We pay £1600 for his Fiesta (fully comp, 8yo 1.25cc Zetec 5 door Ghia), but just for a laugh I fired up the comparison site and updated his car to an 8 year old 740i...

Hmmm - yeah really cheap wink

If you can prove to us that a barge is cheaper than an average 18yo's car (Fiesta, Clio, Corsa etc) - then I'll happily apologise and bow down to thee.

Try a older barge, 8 years old its still young. Aim for late 90s.

I've been sat back for a bit just watching this thread and I'd just like to say, barges aren't good. Polly (the punto) is group 12 insurance @ £1500 1st Year. A 2.5 diesel discovery LR or Defender or even Range Rover (I like LR's) are all group 10 yet they are £4K + to insure.

My mum used to have a Volvo 960 24v. 2 ton, 140mph and did the sprint in less than 10. Yet this is about £5k to insure.

Now you can all argue which car I'm more likely to crash, or can drive faster in, but I'm afraid barges don't work frown

The Series 3 that was suggested I like, however the insurance is still around the 3-4K which is too much for me.

My dad had a Honda Accord, 2.0 VTEC 148bhp, and that was £1800 to insure first year... Makes no sense, yet this 'barge' is cheap to insure? I don't really like the car tbh, colour is horrible.

Some barges are good, but you'd spend absolutely hours trying to find the rare model that never comes up for sale, which doesn't have £99999999 insurance

Strange, might be your postcode maybe. I had both parents as named drivers too which helped.

Many different factors other than the age to be fair.

On polly, when I put my mum on, it upped it by £400/year. Same on my mates fabia. Yet another mate I have is about to take his test and looking for a car, adding his mum took £400 off.

Lambo Huracan. The fabia mate did a quote on this, came back as £6000. Lol

Have you tried anything a bit more unusual like an Abarth Punto, Toyota Starlet Turbo, Suzuki Swift GTI/Sport, VW Lupo GTI?

Like the Lupo GTi, but £1900 with black box is far too much 2nd year than I'm prepared (I don't like black boxes smile ) and £4K without frown

Out of curiosity, run a check on "A720 PNO" or a nissan cherry turbo, 1983.

I got it for £1800 for the years insurance at 18.

Just to support the cheap jag insurance think, When i was 20, 3 years ago now i insured my S Type R (400hp for those who dont know) for less than £1000. That was 10000 miles a year.

I was with admiral.

Oh wow, I had it insured fully comp with exhaust/air filter/intercooler and wheels declared for £1800 3 years ago.

Must be other factors not helping.

Problem is, 20 is 3 yrs Ncb and 3 years more mature. The amount of difference 3 years makes even without having licence or Ncb is mental

I tried a Jag XJ...not quite £250. Try £7327
And to answer someone who suggested the 750i was too new - I tried an older one and the cost went up. Not surprising - older cars (+10 years old) are almost always more expensive to insure.
