Anything French and BMW because I worked for them and know what the average owner is like.

Most manufacturers have at least on appealing car in the range.

Never fancied a Trabant however.
I'd like to say Jeep or Chrysler, but you're absolutely right. I don't think I could categorically say that one of their wonderfully mad ridiculously displaced V8s wouldn't tempt me to overlook how fugly, cheap-feeling and completely unnecessary they are. biggrin

Hyundai, Daihatsu, Proton, SsangYong, Kia. Not keen on these brands that do not have much motorsport history or are kind of new to me. Prefer brands I saw when growing up. They could offer me 100 year warranty and I will still not like them.

Generally prefer European brands although do not mind some Japanese ones like Honda, Mazda and Toyota.

Vauxhall too. Liked some of the older models but there is something that puts me off the brand.

i can honestly say I would never rule anything out due to some weird prejudice. This anti-French sentiment is laughable.

I've had a large number of vehicles, but I've never owned a Ford or Vauxhall. I very nearly bought a Fiesta recently though - changed my mind as the very similar Mazda 2 is available in "Green as fk".

No Vauxhall appeals to me - maybe an old Opel GT if that counts?

Never had an Audi, but wouldn't mind one from the 80's when they were good.

Hyundai have quite a bit of Motorsport history.
I'd happily have a new i20/i30/i40 or a Kia C'eed.

Personally I wouldn't buy a Vauxhall, aside from the VX220 Turbo and the Astra J VXR

Peugeot. I've had a couple and as far as I'm concerned, I will never have another (unless a 205/309GTi appears for an absolute bargain and that won't be happening). The customer service is possibly the only thing worse than their new cars. Unfortunately, my wife had a 207 when we got together, then traded it in for one of the last 207s made as they gave her a very good deal (£6k off partially covers the st car and service I had from them, I guess) and I truly hate driving it. At least she's said she's done with Peugeot one she's finished paying for this one.

Alfa - old ones are too fragile, newer models leaves me cold and I really can't see that changing at any point in the future.

Anything from VAG. Utterly bland and overrated dross. Any modern Honda, Jag, Ford or Vauxhall happily, but not VAG.

I don't really have any hangups about car makes, but I can't fathom why Audis are so popular, so that would be my nomination.

Only two I wouldn't buy and one of those has two exceptions.

Vauxhall (with the exceptions of the VX220 and Monaro).
Porsche (I'm hardly in the market though so I doubt they are losing any sleep there).

In general there are other makes I'd be unlikely to buy over their "competition" but not totally going to rule them out.

Can't ever see me buying a Ferrari of any description or a Porsche come to that. Neither hold much appeal. I don't like the Tesla hype either so they will never be on my shopping list.

anything French...

but I would narrow NOT buying anything else down to a particular dealership/garage/person.....

I shall start the list with

VW in Shirley Road Southampton.......salesman was drunk.....second time I went in there (too actually order a car) another one tried "door Clunking" show me the "quality" of the car....I might look stupid....but he looked even more stupid when I just turned away and walked out

Hendy Ford in Chandlers Ford......salesman tried to drive an eco 1.0 litre fiesta like it was a hot hatch....frightened the crap out of me, made me car sick.....didn't buy the car....

I've said 'never again' to a Fiat/Alfa three times now. I've not had one for about 8 years now so I'm getting close to giving in if the right one comes along.

If you'd asked my 20-year old self if he'd ever fancy a Honda estate he would have told you to piss right off, but I've got one now! I also used to not like Fords much at all, but now the only two cars I'm likely to buy new anytime soon both don the blue oval. Having said all that, unless VW have some kind of Damascene conversion as a result of their current troubles and start making cars that I'd be comfortable owning once the warranty's ran out, then I can't see me getting one. And for some reason I just don't like Vauxhalls much - I can't shake a (possibly totally baseless) feeling that they're a bit cheap n' nasty.

Alfa Romeo: been there, done that. Unreliable car, and truly terrible customer service. I might be tempted if a really nice SZ came up for sale at the right price though.

Hyundai / Kia: driven a few as hire cars when travelling in Europe. Felt cheap, and ergonomics didn't work for me

Sadly, JLR now: they've gone too 'bling', with not much substance. I'd have an older Jag any time though.

Audi: I just don't like the way they drive, nothing more. Oh, and they lie about their CO2 emissions smile

Bentley: same problem as JLR, too much bling and 'look at ME'. I wouldn't rule out a classic Bentley though

Personally though, I have a strong love for power and RWD, which does limit my choice quite a bit.

My rules were always Jap or German. But once I realised how cheap Ford parts were and how many places know them well enough (cheaper labour charges for bigger jobs) I thought they are a good car to own even if they do decide to go wrong more often, which myne hasn't so far... touch wood!

Fiat, Renault and Peugeot are normally off my list when car shopping despite relatives having no issues with any of the more modern examples!

wouldnt want another citroen / pug after the wifes shockingly bad 55 plate c2. front passanger seat would only lock at back or front of rails 70 percent of the time ie touching dash or practically touching seat behind. it threw a sparkplug out of the engine, the immobiliser would randomly play up and not let the car start, the cd player would randomly not recoginize disks ( and couldn't change it without going to a stealership because taking out the cd player without them coding it disables the central locking ( what moron thought of that) the gearbox randomly wouldnt go into gear ( the car only had 65k on it)
the heater was crap, the headlight bulbs seem to require a disembodied hand to replace on the drivers side ( and it ate bulbs - french electrics i guess). it was quite thirsty for a 1.4, it rattled and creaked , both sides of the front suspension collapsed - one one week, one the next ( the car was 7 at this point - 7) - the exhaust backbox mounting fell off - and citroen will only sell you a whole system; cue anglegrinder and tracking a backbox down at a factors ) the trackrod ends went.

still within the family - a c3 1.4 16v diesel - if it stalled, and you started it without taking the key all the way to completely off, the power steering would turn off. it also rattled, had an injector leak at one point and would throw huge clouds of white smoke on startup.
same person owned a c4 picasso which had a stupid leccy handbrake that wouldnt release half the time and had engine management issues.
same person owned a 307 estate with the same make of radio as fitted to my wifes c2 ( slightly different model) - same problem - went to main dealer and was quoted 400 quid for a new one. thats not a changer or anythingfancy just a bog standard fm cd player. (for scale, an all singing all dancing sony unit was about 200 quid at the time with aux in etc)

as you can tell, theres been a few problems.

Can't see me ever buying anything that originates in France, Fiat are not on the top of my wish list and for some reason I have a dislike of anything with the Rover moniker on it. Skoda, despite now producing quite good cars, are still tarnished in my eyes from things they were producing many years ago, and Korean cars don't do anything for me.

Doesn't half make buying a new car a problem with so many on the "meh, no thanks" list.

Oh, and I'd never buy a Ferrari, because Enzo Ferrari was a conceited git who treated a lot of his customers with complete disdain. Give me a Lamborghini any time in preference.
