Took my '05 Gti from 30k to 90k miles, some of that with a REVO stage 1 map. Other than a weeping water pipe I had no problems at all. It was properly thrapped on a regular basis (once warm), serviced regularly, generally did >30mpg (40mpg on a steady run), and hardly used any oil. It's not the most characterful engine ever produced, but does a decent job in the Golf.

Once though it didn't start; but just I turned the key again.

I do feel a prerequisite of modern engine design would be to make an engine that didn't get through 10 liters of oil between services.

Wouldn't touch one personally!
This^^.

I've had all manner of heaps over the years but none have used any oil whatsoever.

So if I had an engine that used even 0.5 litre per 1000km (ie every 600 odd miles) I'd consider it broken.

As for the argument that high revving, high performance motors use oil. Well, I'm afraid that's tosh as well: I've owned a number of fast bikes, revving to over 12,000rpm, and none of those ever used any oil either.

There is no reason for any modern engine to use oil unless it's worn out.

Anything else equates to poor design.

I don't think anyone is really denying that. The question is whether it matters - clearly it does at an emotional level to you but in terms of ownership it really makes very little difference unless you're the sort of person who's scared to open the bonnet. Having said that, ours uses nothing like a litre every 600 miles, it might annoy me more if it did.

Of all the design flaws/engineering shoddiness in our car, the oil consumption would be a VERY long way down the list of things I'd like to see fixed.

I think a lot of the oil burning issues seem to be because they're quite oil sensitive. Mine burned about a litre of Castrol Edge 5w30 every 3-4k for two years. I changed to Mobil 1 5w40 and the mark on the dipstick has barely moved in 6 months.

I average about 32-33mpg on a mixed journey, though economy around town is crap. The engine has been pretty reliable- I've changed the PCV, diverter valve, plugs, filters and that's basically it in two years.

I had one in an S3. Was fine - didn't treat it too gently!
Did use about 1L of oil every 6 months though IIRC.
