My friend bought a lemon of one a year or two back. Thing was falling apart and whilst he jacked it up to re-attach the brake caliper (Not a well looked after example...) the jack went through the underside of the car. It then took a liking to overheating, then just got shot of it.

Early SR20's are fun. I much prefer my 14a, 300hp, 126k and going strong biggrin

Friend of mine had one of these. It split in half. There are many out there that have been ruined by people in Bradford.
Even though it Split in half. I'd still own another

Interesting, when I bought mine I had it undersealed. That plus the fact its been laid up for the last 7 years led the mechanic to message me once he had it up on the ramp, that underneath its the cleanest he's seen. Only the engine, rubber, headlights, fuel pump and brakes to go then!

there used to be a white GTi-R around the Birmingham area with a number plates like "P3EAKY" or similar and it wasnt standard. i saw it take off from lights a few times on a few differnet occasions like some big rugby player had run up behind it and given it a right kick into the air. i mean instant go. 0-30 must have been about 1.5sec. saw it rape an Impreza turbo like it was 1.3 escort so it clearly had over 300bhp.

that car would still make some of todays mega hatches look lame in the pub benchmark 0-60 race. id say it was high 3s or very low 4s car to 60. it looked cartoon like as it took off the line. bonkers fast.

They are bonkers quick it would seem!

At least in a straight line they are faster than cosworths and deltas etc. Good value for money considering the ludicrous price of those today smile

14.5s to a Ton. That’s still quick by today’s standards!

They are deceptively quick, especially for the price although a friend of mine could never keep up with my Type R Impreza even though they were about the same level of tune, in fact he eventually broke his gearbox trying to make it faster. They have a few known weak points, the gearbox and head gaskets being two of the better know ones. They also aren't as pretty or well know as some of the other rally reps from that period which means they are still a relative bargain.

For something to drive rather than cherish or stow away in a garage to watch it go up in value, they are pretty hard to beat for the price.

Old thread, but they were Hot Hatches from a different planet back in 1990/91 with 220 bhp.

All the other hatches were making do with 130-150 bhp. I’m sure there was a price difference to match, but I was 14 then, so I’ve no idea!

Had the pleasure of being a passenger in a 400hp modified one. Made my integrale and my friends impreza sti ra feel like invalid cars. Just bumped into this guy on a jolly with my pal.

The Nissan wasn’t quite alone though - Mazda and Lancia were making stuff with well over 150bhp too and Rover came along shortly after too

Back in the mid 00s they had one for sale at a local jap port place, of always fancied them. Loved the bonnet scoop, guy says take it for a few hours if you like. Seats and driving position were nice. I rememeber the brakes being poor compared to my evo and I seem to recall ldig off oversteerinv as you certainly couldn't do it off the throttle, I just got more understeer. I'm sure with some fettling it could be sorted. If I had the money I'd have one as a part of my rally collection of cars. Green or black for me. An interesting little car which when you think the mk2 gold gti was around, the gti or raylle never had a chance, weird how there was never any comparison about in the mags.

My friend had a few and I always had a soft spot for them. He started with a 400hp monster with a straight cut GB etc and it was a beast but he rolled it at about 20-30mph in winter (ice leading to understeer + tall curb) so he replaced it with a fairly stock one freshly imported which he took up to around 280-300ish HP which he then swapped for a 200sx S14A as he was getting into drifting.

I preferred the almost stock one as the 400hp one always felt like it was on the ragged edge of reliability whereas the 280hp one still kept up with my 450hp R34 no problem and felt solid.

going back many years, i had a little play with one. at the time i was driving a 230bhp escort turbo and it just pulled out and went past like i was parked. biblical performance when tuned

Nicknamed the cosworth killer. I lusted after one of these as a kid. And eventually in 2005 I had one. Spent a small fortune sorting the gearbox and brakes and amongst other bits it had 387bhp, not a lot on the road that could keep up with it. Absolutely loved it!

I looked recently to see where these are at and they aren't cheap for a decent one if you can even find one. Paid 5.5k for my immaculate 35k mile jap import.

This was another dream car of the childhood Gran Turismo 2 player. They're just plain bonkers. Unfortunately they always seem to be ruined so I'd imagine a good stock one is becoming very sought after. The GTI-R always seemed like a mad version of the Toyota Glanza.

The biggest problem is that they're not perfect and do need some work, as mentioned the terrible brakes even with standard power. They've literally just put near standard brakes on there from the gti and added an extra 87hp, it was never going to work, also the gearbox again I had mine from 35k miles and it wasn't messed around with for a few years, the gearbox and clutch still decideded it didn't like itself even with only 227bhp.
