I'm in the market for a small estate and living in the sticks I spend about 50% of my driving time on narrow muddy lanes with the occasional foray very lightly off road to avoid tractors or to get to more remote places to walk and cycle.

These two cars appeal because they're little more than normal cars and that's all I need. They're also no more expensive than the 2wd versions so you get a touch more capability without the SUV tax.

I think I just wrote the above to avoid the plethora of 'just get winter tyres' comments I'll likely get but does anyone have any experience? Both the same car I guess and I like the looks of the Leon...if not the name!

I can't help with the question of the 4x4 choice, but it's not even a choice between those two. The Leon is a vastly, vastly superior car. I don't mind the Octavia, but it doesn't tickle my pickle. The Leon, on the other hand, is an absolute hoot. Double points in FR form with the 180 horsepower diesel engine.
Gearbox wise, it's up to you. The seven speed semi-automatic really doesn't take full advantage of the FR if you're, say, on a track, but for the 99% of the time you're just driving about normally, it's very good indeed. The manual is a nice thing to use, the ratios are sensibly spaced and the whole thing works beautifully as a package.
Day-to-day, the only thing that would see me into an Octavia over the Leon is the manual handbrake in the Skoda. I detest all electronic handbrakes and the one in the Leon does nothing to make me change my mind about them.

Also, winter tyres are cheap this time of year...

Old thread, but the Len is not vastly superior to the Octavia. Its virtually identical to drive, has less space inside and much cheaper and nastier trim and finish inside
