a PDK car being 'analogue'. It's an auto!
Without wishing to open up the auto/'manuel' debate once more, PDK and in particular PDK S is an auto 'manuel' not strictly an auto.

Whatever you want to call it, it's entirely digital in terms of driver input - you press a button/pull a lever/whatever and it changes gear for you. To my mind that's the definition of an automatic gearbox but that's obviously just a question of semantics.

There is an official definition of "automatic" cars somewhere, and PDK qualifies (I think because it can change gear on its own; or perhaps because it does not have a clutch pedal). In either case, it it plainly an automatic gearbox. "Automated manual" is just marketing speak.

From a licencing point of view, the DVLA base it on the existence of a clutch pedal; or more precisely on a manually controllable clutch (a hand clutch doesn't make a car an automatic).

What you call the gearbox isn't really relevant to the point, though. It's an automatic to you and I; it's a manual to av185. Ultimately it's only a name.

I just can't help feeling that getting into a 911 without a conventional manual gearbox would be like getting in to bed with a beautiful woman...only to find it has a cock.

I sold my GTS with >35k miles on it, Alcantara was still mint on seats. Steering wheel needed a brush but came up perfect. http://www.dicklovett.co.uk/porsche/used-cars/5311...
I like that, quite tempted to go for a look! Assume they are making a load of cash on that.
Actually only a couple of grand more than they gave me for it.

Electronic throttles certainly can make a car feel odd but equally they can be indistinguishable from a cable throttle if the manufacturer wants to make them so. Same with EPAS really; it's not there yet but given a few more years I think manufacturers will be able to make systems which feel exactly like HPAS ones. Whether they'll want to or not is another matter entirely.

Most of these modern electronic systems are not fundamentally bad things - they simply allow the manufacturer to control things they previously couldn't, and manufacturers are using that control to make cars behave in ways which I, personally, don't like.

Porsches efforts with these things are generally better for keen drivers than most. The one thing that really puts of off modern Porsches isn't an "analogue vs digital" thing at all, it's the bloody variable ratio steering rack which is an entirely mechanical screw-up. smile

Eyes off lads, she's mine biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Popped down to the showroom today, Lee of Maxted-Page was kind enough to open the showroom for me to take a peep. What a GREAT set up Lee has there, 962's, ducktails, even a genuine GT40! I was in car heaven!! angel

Car is amazing, and only has 32,900 on the clock which was a nice surprise considering the ad says 38,900. it's my first Porsche & I cant wait to pick her up next week.

Couldn't recommend Lee and Maxted-Page anymore! genuine petrol head!

Michael.

Great car the 997 GTS looks like a proper 911 and goes like a GT3 with 408 bhp can be increased to 440 bhp via software if required.
The manual version is rare but the pdk is exceptional with the F1 type steering wheel manual gear change available if required. The car is extremely well made my particular car does not have the alacantra and is all leather, the alloys are 5 stud so every garage can change the wheels as the centre locks do not look any better in my opinion and a lot of tyre garages don't realise they require special grease every time they are changed.
The car wasn't in production for long maximum 2 years so not many were made so maybe it will be a future classic for the collectors but at the moment it's up there with the best I swopped a 996 Turbo plus cash to buy one and I will never regret it as the 997 GTS is faster and makes a great noise compared to a turbo car and handles better than the 996 T.

I have owned a white 997 GTS coupe rear wheel drive for 4 years it is a lovely car the only problem has been a sticking horn on the steering wheel. The car was bought with full leather and beautiful alloys replace those sill centre locking wheels so I would not have to use any special tools to remove a wheel.
I used to own a 996 Turbo cabriolet which was quick but I do find this car is even faster and feels better balanced and the ride and exhaust noise is lovely and much better than the turbo's. I also have a 986 Boxster S which I use for open top driving in summer it's also a great car and although not as quick as the other two is still an exciting car to drive and cheap to run too.

I paid 62,500 for my 997 GTS it has now done 29000 miles in 10 years so maybe I will change it soon and expect to receive around 53k for it so it has not increased in value as a lot of people expected but in another 10 years time I think it will be worth a lot more as it's up there with the 993 as one of the best Carreras ever built by Porsche.
