FWIW the facelift 6 cylinder coupes do appear to have a deeper thrum at lower revs, and are raspier under acceleration compared to the prefacelift models. Looking at the ones I've owned it looks like they got rid of the butterfly flap near the tip of the tailpipes.

When buying an older car like an E46 don't pick the car based on spec, pick it based on condition.If it's a good straight car with no rust and no other problems buy it and live without heated seats.
That is a lovely colour, the blue really suits the lines of the car.

Seeing as all these variants of the E36/E46 have been mentioned above and, especially as people ask re performance, I thought it might interest some to see the comparative acceleration/in-gear/economy figures for the different engines.

E36 328i considerably quicker than E46 version, in fact nearly up with a 330i to 60 but not 100!
I've never driven an E36, but as E46s go I test drove a lovely 328Ci (even had the electric window blinds) but it felt so stodgy compared to the 325ti that I eventually bought. Might be partly because it was an SE, whereas all 325 Compacts had Sport suspension regardless of SE or Sport designation.
Also I believe the Compact had revised steering which the other E46s didn't get until the facelift, so post-facelift 330Ci Sport may just be the best non-M there is (E9* models are just too big) - please don't tell anyone until I have one!

I sold mine with 230K miles on it and didn't burn a drop of oil it was lovely. Shame the rest of the car it was attached to was rusting to buggery.
It does as we have fitted an M50 only just before christmas on my mates E46, Feels quicker than his dads 330i now up to 90 but then the 330 just revs that bit sweeter higher upI sold mine with 230K miles on it and didn't burn a drop of oil it was lovely. You've got those extra little holes on the TU head that wouldn't even be covered by the E36 inlet.
