R8 is the one that did it for me (and I typically don't even like these posh Veedubs)....but that powertrain is as tremendous as the article suggests. Not sure what all the fuss is about with the dynamic steering - feels fine to me.

I think the Macca is an outstanding piece of kit but sadly it's not really in the same price point as the other two (not for a like for like spec). R8 won me over anyway biggrin

None, though I`ve bought many sub £100,000 cars, all of which have cruise control
Cool, in a few years time you can buy mine but it will command a strong premium over similar cars as the cruise control will be unused and as good as new.

I popped into the local Audi dealer (looking at an S1). Whilst there I was rather drawn to a gleaming black R8 V10 sat in the showroom. I have to say it looked sensational in the metal.

I decided to move the GT on quicker than even I thought I would - I waited for it three times longer than I owned it but with my attention spam, that was probably half the problem!

Also, after driving a friends Gen-1 R8 last year I always wondered if I should've maybe have bought one of those - I thought it was tremendous but had previously always disregarded them for one reason or another. It did highlight how much I wanted to get back in a naturally aspirated car again, hence looking at a Gen-1 R8 LMX. But I couldn't get comfortable in it as that final edition model only came with bucket seats, plus its tech was very dated.

I liked the look of the new one (at least after I saw it in person) and the interior was like being teleported into the future, even compared to the GT. The main draw compared to the GT is the drivetrain - that V10 and that transmission is simply the best I've experienced to date. The GT's transmission was actually very good and I couldn't imagine how shift speed and quality could perceptibly be improved upon, until I drove this new R8. It also rides better than my GT did and it seems to have similarly direct steering but with considerably more weight (the GT's always felt too light).

I've got a lot of time for AMG's but quite honestly, the R8 feels (and looks) like it's worth a good price point or two higher - ironically, it ended up costing about the same.
It never ceases to amaze me how quickly you get through cars!
I'm surprised that you prefer the new R8 to your AMG GT. For me it was the other way around; I had a gen-1 R8 v10 manual coupe (loved the engine/gearbox)but didn't like the handling and much preferred the SLS.
I look forward to reading the running reports and it looks a fab car - enjoy!

If I had to have a McLaren, it'd be a 12C. Everything else since has looked awful. I'm sure one could apply 650S/675LT spec upgrades to it without losing the looks.

By the way, what's the difference between the 540C and 570S?

R8? First-gen with a manual for me, ta. V8 or V10, not fussy...

911? That'll be a 997 GT3 for me, thanks. Base 3.8, RS or 4.0, not fussy...

For a real dramatic supercar, I'll take a used Murcielago any day. For a slightly more sensible daily driver, it'd be an SLS.

It amazes me too. This is the last one. I promise laugh

Now, you see.....after living with both GT and SLS for a while as daily drivers, I'd say I ended up preferring the SLS to drive. The GT was obviously the better rounded, more modern car and it was obviously technically superior (the impressive lap times the GT manages to do proves that) but it's all in the steering for me - whilst I loved the SLS's steering, I got to really dislike the GT's over-light helm. The GT was also quite a hardcore machine and highly strung machine all the time. The R8 can be like that if you want it to be, but it can also play a much more refined and relaxed role if you want it to.

To be fair, I really did like the Gen-1 R8....in between the huge void that was SLS and GT ownership, I got to drive a friends late gen-1 R8 V10 (the first time I'd driven an R8) and I was very impressed. Certainly enough for the GT to probably never have a chance with me as I always had that R8 experience gnawing away at me. In my current limited experience of R8's, the Gen-1 and Gen-2's are quite different cars and I just ended up preferring the more modern approach of the newer car....but I fully understand if some people prefer the more analogue experience of the older ones too.

Palmball, which do you rate as the better daily driver - the R8 V10 Plus or the AMG-GTS?
