Utterly disagree. My parents bought my first car for me too when I was 17 and I was over the moon. It didn't matter what car it was, they had effectively bought me the ability to go where ever when ever I wanted without having to try and pinch a lift or spend several days on public transport. As a 17 year old, that was invaluable and actually, them doing it probably prevented me from doing a lot of stupid st and the interest in cars it spawned off the back of it is the basis of my working career.

Clearly that isn't going to be true for everyone, but buying your kid a car is the ultimate expression of trust as a parent from my point of view. When my daughter turns 17, I'd like to think she'll have earned the same level of trust and respect to be given the same gift.

The line about defining the pecking order at college... it wasn't that long ago that I was at college and honestly most people were impressed if you had your own car. Give a fk what the car actually was.

Actually, now I think about it that was 10 years ago.
Agree there in the mid 90's you were lucky if your parents could afford to buy you a car never mind sulking what it was.
I knew a few people who owned a car at 17. I had to borrow the old mans but I remember the Friday night I 1st went out alone in the car, it didn't matter what it was or what it looked like it was the fact I had freedom to drive.
I felt completely the same when I passed my test and got access to my dad's white Pug 205 Diesel van - didn't care that it wasn't 'cool' - just had fun being able to do my own thing for the first time (plus you could get about 4 consenting mates in the back as well as a lucky one in the passenger seat... biggrin

Typical 40-60 year old moaning about how back in my day this...

Wonder how you feel when the same youth of today that you are stereotyping as lazy, good for nothings will act when you want them to wipe your arse in a carehome. :-)
My mate manages a care home in Warwickshire - take a guess how many care workers there are British ?

None - all imported labour as the British youth won't do the job.
Knowing care Homes I can't blame them. The wages are crap for the hours and work.

It was a nice thought but even 10/15 years ago that would have been a 'banger' and today it really is just old. I'm not saying he needs a Maserati but surely a modern ish punto/polo/206 is far less embarrassing.

EMBARRASSING? I'd of been very happy with this as a first car (then again as previously mentioned I happy with a 20yo Volvo for my first car so I may just be deranged wink )

If my old man had turned up with a Corsa on the other hand... I'd of been grateful and saved up enough to replace it ASAP!

Very nice! Worth checking out (if historically interested) if that's actually a "Formel E" version. Will have Loong 4th gear if true and possibly a start-stop system if it's the later 1.3 engine, or if not it should have the high compression 1.1 motor. Both will like modern good quality fuel and oil. No matter what, really a pretty cool find in that condition and with that mileage.

Sure you guys know what you are doing, but first thing I'd do -- considering the history of the vehicle -- is oil and filters, then brake fluid and possibly discs, pads and drums. And stick some modern tyres on it.

Roll the arches. Fit biggest wheels possible. Lower it. Sticker 50% of panels. Sand the others down. Bucket seats. Will a vag 1.8t fit in that?

I'm jealous you picked that up for the money you did.

When is the readers cars thread starting. I feel like donating £5 towards the modding.

My dad bought me the exact same model and colour (but with the 1.3 engine) when I was 17. He paid £50 for it. It was immaculate and was driven by an old dear to and from the shops. It had stood for a while and some of the electrics didn't work.

Had loads of fun fixing it up for when I passed my test.

To the OP, my sister was bought a Fiat Uno, nothing wrong with it at all, well looked after, but she said she wanted a new corsa. To which my dad replied "you better get yourself a job then..."
She ended up loving that car and had it for 7 years.

I agree.
The idea of an older car appeals to me in general but having seen the pictures I can understand the disappointment. That looks old fart old rather than retro cool. A mini or beetle has far more appeal.

Having said that I can't help but feel something with a few air bags and modern NCAP rating would be a far safer bet given how often young lads crash!

I'm sure he could find £100 to fit a CD player in it. After all that is on the way to what you want. Him learning to do things for himself.
Nice looking car for the money.

I can understand an ordinary 17 year old not being keen on that, as its sufficiently old that only car geeks would like it at that age. Me, I'd have loved it at that age but I loved anything to do with cars, 'cool' or not.

My issue is with the attitude of the boy in question. It's fine if it's not his cup of tea but he could show some gratitude, or at least be polite about it, and then there are ways and means of delicately explaining that it might not really be suitable.

It's difficult for me to make the comparison, since if my dad had given me that at 17 (only six or so years ago) I'd have been delighted and immediately taken it for a spin round the block....like about 200 miles! And if my college mates didn't think it was cool...that'd have just made it more cool!

I'm sorry, but the car itself looks very dated in that colour. I wouldn't want it as my 17th birthday present. However a MK2 GTi....now you're talking.

I can see how you could improve it. New respray and set of BBS deep dish split rims. Maybe some Recaro's or tartan seats from a MK5 GTi. Momo wheel, air suspension and camber and new plates with flared arches.

Seeing it cost you 100 quid, maybe you have a got some small funds... hehe
