Having looked at the pictures no wonder he was embarrassed. I would never let a child of mine be seen in something so ridiculous.

There's a bloody classic mini in your garage. Give him that to drive in, the girls will love him and he'll be forever grateful.
That polo is the epitome of social suicide in the mind of a 17 year old. He's meant to have his first fumble in the back of his first car, but he'll be too embarrassed to pick a woman up in it.
At least when you catch him dogging in a mini it'll be hilarious, legs sticking out of windows.

That Mini isn't standard and is the OP's P&J.
As it stands its almost certainly uninsurable for the young lad.
Dad is a single parent and sounds like a real petrolhead who has put much of his time and spare cash into his Mini and even if it were standard, giving it to the lad as his first car would be effectively writing its death warrant.

I'm writing in jest, with a slight dollop of the truth on top.

CD player? aren't the kids spotifying aac's via 4G and bluetooth these days?
I was about to mention my dad's extend of fatherly love in 1996 being to drive me to the auction and pointing out a mk2 passat estate as a reasonable purchase to me - B622 BGF - probably the second worst piece of advice he's ever given me, and of course it was my hard earnt dough that secured this particular ~£500/ton worth of automotive icon.
But then like another poster has pointed out you're suffering from old timerism a bit and not realising just how "old" that car is to a kid, a 12 year old VW pigsat was on paper a reasonable cheap first runabout, but buying one now would be like me back then being offered a relic like a 60's viva or escort. It would have been a bit of a shock to be fair on the kid.
Easy done though, I bought my first car in 18 years recently (primarily for the mrs) after having only vans for years and was intially looking at VR6 corrado's... a car I lusted after 20 years ago but couldn't afford/insure, until I looked past the misty notalgia and it dawned on me that while being one of best built cars of it's day I was still looking at a car over 20 years old and all the agg that'll go with that when I could grab a 10 year old BMW 330ci for the same money.

It was a nice thought but even 10/15 years ago that would have been a 'banger' and today it really is just old. I'm not saying he needs a Maserati but surely a modern ish punto/polo/206 is far less embarrassing.
EMBARRASSING? I'd of been very happy with this as a first car (then again as previously mentioned I happy with a 20yo Volvo for my first car so I may just be deranged )If my old man had turned up with a Corsa on the other hand... I'd of been grateful and saved up enough to replace it ASAP!
As I said before not every parent can afford a new car for their kids, in fact most can't. BUT, this is a day you would have known was coming for many years and £150 on a car is just too little money. You've bought that more for what you felt was good rather than what he feels good.
A 206 or something can be had for not much more so I'd speak to him and see what he would like

Checking if it's a normal thing equates to moaning like fk? Even though an hour or so later I confirmed it was and got on with it You don't by any chance work in the media do you?

And just what does "Shat out £5K mean please" Oh and I work in a normal day to day job, pretty boring to be honest, but I actually like it.Pretty sure I said I shat out £5k not spent £5k?

You sound like a complete c0ckFWIW, my first ever driving experience was in a breadvan Polo. My mother had a 1988 E-reg 1.0L that gave many years of dutiful service!
Well, after replying to this topic on the 13th, later that day I got a request from my ex and Daughter to source a car for the daughter to use whilst at uni in Newcastle.
Quick search around on Saturday turned up a nice Ford Focus 1.4 at a local garage , 82K, full year ticket and a new clutch going in. Honest enough looking motor so bought it for £1295.
Sent the details to the daughter.... happy as larry, just grateful to have a motor to get around in.
To be fair she would have been happy with any of the car links I sent her to look at but did say the JWG Rover 25 was maybe a bit 'Meh!'.

I think the issue is the ungratefulness rather than the car. It may not be the best choice, as it is pretty ancient - my first motor was a 74 Viva, but in 87 that was just an older second hand car. This would be like me at that point getting something from the 50s (which I would have loved, but I was always into classics!) It certainly looks like a good buy, and as others have mentioned can be modded (watch the insurance impact though) and he can save up (remember that?) for something to play his banging tunes (copyright James May).

Looks like a tidy little car, your son should be proud of his Dad!
It's fine for a 1st car, it'll get dinged and scratched and it won't matter.
