Put the dashcam in my family car for our recent holiday to Cornwall, mainly because I wanted to figure out why it wasn't recording everything so I could sit and fiddle with it whilst my Mrs was driving.

Caught this chap on our last day, heading back from Looe on a country road. Looks less frightening than it was, closing speeds were about 50mph (NSL).

Apologies for the language.

Car turned in across the cyclist and was 100% at fault...
Don't disagree.

I think he sits up. You can see him go for the brakes about 3 secs before impact.

Rough-and-ready tip for calculating speed on UK youtube videos:

  • On any motorway NSL road, the distance from the start of one white line to the next should be 9 meters.
  • "Frame-by-Frame" Chrome extension allows you to step through and count frames. Youtube vids are typically 25FPS
  • Count the number of frames taken to travel a white line+gap,
  • Speed in MPH is 500 divided by that value.
So in your vid, about 9 frames per white line, speed is about 55MPH, agreeing with your figure.
For more accuracy, average the frames over several white line sections.

That's a gopro chesty mount with the gp set on medium fov, or something very very similar.

It doesn't react to head movement so can't say one way or another about where he was looking.

The move a few secs before impact is either standing up or more likely leaning back. Suggests he was looking and reacting.

The mounting angle is weird in this mount because you use the tall swoopy buckle and usually attach the camera rotated as far back as it will go which is about 3 degrees past being parallel with the chest plate.

I don't see how anyone can think he was looking down, look at his hand position on the hoods ffs.
Exactly. His hand position and near straight arms tells a story to any half decent road cyclist. He wasn't on the hoods or even the drops.. laugh

10:03 - Polo driver is going a little too fast, that aside, the black car (who is parked on double yellows despite the obvious free spaces) is the root cause of this issue for causing a bottleneck - no doubt some self important numpty just "popping to the shops" and the van driver doesn't appear to be in an actual space either. Polo driver is not completely at fault. In fact I'd suggest that whichever came last between the black car and the van is the knob for causing an obstruction.
Look again, the driver's door starts to open just as the Polo passes. Regardless of whether the polo was going a little quick, the van driver should have looked. Even if the Polo was going far slower, at the point the door opens, impact was inevitable

It just shows the mentality of the kind of person that actually wants to buy a red Corsa with white stripes!

Absolutely agree - the time to merge was behind the red Passat imo, everything else is pushing it.

Couldn't believe they blamed the Corsa for that, people like this clearly believe they are good drivers too.

The first one is a five door, the second one a three door. The base model Sting gets those stripes and free insurance deals make Corsas popular with new drivers.
