I've wondered why cars from different manufacturers can have the same names. Are there not copyright issues or do these circumstances avoid the copyright issues (age, domestic market etc.)?

I'm think of:

Mitsubishi/Pontiac GTO (Not the model name with Ferrari)
Maserati/VW Bora

There's certainly others that I can think of now. Can you add any?

Some good suggestions, however I can understand Roadster as it describes the vehicle, much like GTI.

The ones from the same manufacturer shouldn't create any issues :-)

911 is interesting as weren't Porsche forced to change from the planned 901 due to copyright issues with Peugeot? Or perhaps that's nonsense

No, that's true. Peugeot apparently registered every combination of 3 digit numbers with a 0 in the middle.
