Looks like mini-cab material to me.
It sounds like a mini cab, with the advert stating its really good for the airport run (which has never been a consideration high on my list when buying a car)
One way trip, Dubai-style?

Paying to park is still cheaper - just.

Have the interiors really come a long way? This is smart, functional and well built. No screen to divert the eyes from the road, no 'modes' to confuse, simple climate controls and easy to read dials. Just what people actually need!
I agree, Audis had just about the best interiors in the business back then IMO, and still work extremely well to this day. Like this shed a lot, although it's a pity it's not an Avant for perfect shed-status. And maybe a quattro GmbH 4.2V8 special wink

Big price drop

I guess you'd really want to do a cambelt/waterpump change as there isn't any record of it apart from him saying it appears to be in good condition, but otherwise I really like it.

basic spec means it was right at the top of someone's car list and they had no budget left to do anything to it.

Had an automatic one of these with the 1.8 engine as my rep mobile in the mid 90s. Poxy thing snapped a con rod during the first year at 5:30pm one Friday when 200 miles from home requiring a new engine under warranty that took 3 months. Haven't had another VW Group product since. Very comfortable, unbearably slow, especially with the 1.8 yet somehow this slow car took me to a 111mph speeding tug on the M4, much to the surprise of plod who at first thought it was an A8. As it was a very fair cop we both had a giggle at how on earth this slow thing could have accelerated to that level. The magistrate didn't however...

I had a 2 litre 5 cyl Audi 100 which was pretty much the same car, this being a facelift, basic car dating from 1984 but it was a really nice piece of design and ahead of its time, they were very aerodynamic and light for the size of car, this isnt very powerful but they did do the old 8 valve 2 litre with 115 bhp and for the really unlucky a 90 bhp turbodiesel.

This isnt exciting, its a low spec car in a dull colour, but it does hold some appeal, shorn of bling its got a purposeful, no nonesense vibe, it is pretty simple and will be comfortable and probably reliable, parts are dead cheap and its one of those cars nobody notices and you probably wouldnt worry about leaving, it blends in.

Its not fast, 11 secs to sixty but it will do 125 flat out which means it will cruise at a decent speed easily.

This is a car that wont ask much of you despite being 20 years old, you wont notice it as it just does its job, then you will get rid of it for something fancier and more needy, then you will miss it.

Would suit my daily motoring needs perfectly but I would be afraid of falling asleep at the wheel. No doubt these have the very high gearing typical of German cars of this period making acceleration slothful but returning a high cruising speed and decent motorway mpg.

Compared to a similar age E39 5 Series or W210 Merc I'd imagine this will be cheaper to run and more corrosion resistant.

I think converting 120+ hp into 120+ mph is very creditable - given that a Rover 620 did 105/105 iirc.

When I look at these ads I always see 'the best' in them, knowing that in reality there'll be some odd and fairly revolting stain across one or more seats, and a pong that'd make health inspector take notice.

Don't let that put you off...

£60 and a days work and can have any interior smelling fresh.

One of these, to get the grime and arse juice out of the cloth

Then some of this,

Guarantee any old heap will smell awesome afterwards, have had a few through my hands that smelt like utter dungheaps

The auto glym stuff smells amazing, it isnt overly perfumed, it just leaves it smelling clean and wholesome,

If its leather, break out the Gliptone, from manky cracked leather seats, speak to Furniture clinic,

This is a perfectly solid shed as far as I'm concerned. It's simple, comfortable, spacious and (probably) pretty cheap to run, and completely devoid of anything to make you feel precious about it if it got dinged or you kerbed it. At the same time it's old and leftfield enough that there's an element of character.

As others have mentioned, in Avant guise with a slightly pokier engine it would be stellar - but even then you'd lose some of the completely utilitarian charm.

My old man had one of the pre-facelift ones still called an Audi 100. It was built like an absolute tank. We took it to Kangaroo Island in Aus and drove around for a week on the worst corrugated gravel roads I've ever experienced. At the end we drove it back onto tarmac expecting it to have turned into a horrific rattle box but it was still tight as a drum.

Do you think the missus told him to sell it ages ago and "it just hasn't had any interest"

Cheap, reliable, comfortable and seemingly in good order (liking the Michelins all round)

A perfect station car. Drive, park and forget.

In prospect It'd seem like a great idea, but in reality I'd be bored a fortnight. Maybe if it had a more interesting engine, or was a wagon.

It's like that friend you really really like because he's punctual, but then says nothing of any interest. I'd rather take my chances with the funny, charming, sparky friend who'll 'probably' turn up.

If it was a well-equipped Quattro with a 5, 6 or 8-cylinder engine, I might take more of an interest, but just a base-spec dog-slow 4-cylinder...

I suspect a second hand set of alloys for any of the above cars would be about a grand - let alone the whole car.
