Just heard on the news that the rumours are that Apple are a fair way down the road (sorry) to producing a car.

Given the success of Tesla and the inevitability of electric/battery/recharging tech being very close to acceptable by the masses, it seems Apple would be daft not to be looking at it.

How successful will it be, and what will it be callled?

There is a great chance, it will look like this.

http://marc-newson.com/ford-021c-concept-car/

Marc Newson is currently working for Apple. (Who also designed apple-watch). He has previously designed this Ford prototype back in 2000s, and he is also probably a pistonhead, having very interesting vintage sports car.

It will be an interesting option, but I do not think neither Tesla or Apple would have any chance against VW's electric plans in the future. (Search E-bugster)

iPredict the new Apple car will be called the iCar smile which will be very similar in design to the Google car except that everything will be beautifully finished, though will also be sadly under-powered, and will require several updates to keep their customers happy.

I know many users on here dread the widespread adoption of the autonomous car, but it is coming soon whether they like it or not, and I personally think it will be fantastic for many commuters who aren't PistonHeads and just want to get to work and back with the minimum of fuss, drama and expensive running costs.

This is probably the reason why Apple Maps was developed in preference to Google Maps. They are mapping out every single road in minute detail which can probably be updated in realtime to the autonomous cars as and when they are unleashed.

I wonder if they will engineer it to be out of date within 2 years

In all seriousness, I cannot think of anything more depressing than Apple making a car. If their devices are anything to go by it will be very shiny and appeal to the masses, albeit offering very little in terms of substance and innovation.

iThink you are confusing Apple with the likes of slippery politicians like tOny bLiar or dAve cAmeron who appeared to be shiny appealed to the masses, yet offered little in terms of substance or innovation smile

FWIW I've owned my current iPhone for over five years now and all is good, am still able to make and receive calls on it - is a miracle wink

Who will pay these "expensive running costs" then if not the users?

Apple...screwing you over since 1990 and striving for more ways to do it.

I won't have anything to do with Apple and anybody who buys a car made by them is exposing himself to financial abuse on a grand scale.

Are they really looking at car development, or is this a sick joke?

Its been a rumour for along time, and theres plenty of info out there to support it.

They have so much cash they could develop a car, plant and infrastructure from small change down the back of the sofa.

I imagine it will be a 4 seater with a great instrument cluster but some weird steering wheel and iTunes driven stereo, you'll have to wait for the next version for a boot though.

Who will be brave enough to add the iMaps sat nav function lol

You probably need to look at what the word innovate means, you seem to be confusing it with invent.

Love or loathe Apple you cannot deny they have changed the landscape of technology, yes companies made mp3 players before the ipod, but Apple made them useable and succesful, companies made touch screens phones before the iphone but Apple made them useable and succesful, yes companies made tablets before the ipad....

You see where im going.

Really? I've had iPhones since the 2 and don't feel screwed over in any way. Everything I've ever bought from them has been fine, one issue with a Mac-mini which they sorted out with no fuss.

How have they abused me by providing some good kit and decent back up?

Genuinely interested!

much as I dislike Apple I'm missing that bit.

Their gear is overpriced and often under spec'd , shiny but limited. Yes they have a big walled garden but you know about that when you step inside.

Perhaps an iCar would screw you for iWipers and such but its nothing the auto trade isnt already on to.

Book an appointment with a 'Genius' at a store rather than a garage for a service?

Click 'agree' to start an oil change?

And will only work well if used on the iRoad, a premium road surface only available to Apple Customers. There will be an adapter for other roads, but it'll be an added cost and stick out of the side at an awkward angle. iRoad will be compatible with other vehicles, but it will interfere with their performance.

Yeah I've obviously been screwed as well, I've used Macs at work for 20 years and I've had just one break on me (faulty hard drive not made by Apple) which was repaired free and up and running in no time. I've never had a virus or run anti virus software and i still have a Mac in my studio from early 2009 that runs fine with all the latest software, i cant believe how I've been conned!
