Its far more likely Apple will buy an existing manufacturer. Tesla springs to mind....
Considering Apple have spent a few years employing some of the brightest engineers they could get their hands on from the automotive sector that seems very unlikely. My 'educated' guess is that they're already well into their own development.

Uber's software is basically built to do this, so when autonomous cars work, on button summoning is ready to go.

Less than 5 years away, now.

Rumour says Apple have contracted Magna to build a car. Considering they've made cars like the Mercedes E Class, SLS AMG, Aston Martin Rapide and BMW X3, I think they know a thing or two about building cars. So Magna becomes Apple's Foxconn. It's not out of the realms of possibility. Very complicated and challenging, but possible.

Closer to home Dyson are said to be developing an electric car, (with a little help with a government grant)... Similar product release pattern as Apple, designed obsolescence.

Did Magna actually develop those cars or were they contracted to assemble them from the instructions from the manufacturers who did the development? if the latter they may know very little other than "insert part A into part B and tighten bolt C"

Thin end of the wedge, eventually "they" will not let you drive on the road as you will make mistakes whereas JohnyCab will not.

More info about Project Titan a.k.a Apple car below biggrin

http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/apple/will-apple-ma...

I really think design-wise, they might do something quite interesting. Technically, Tesla has been achieving fantastic experiments and results but their car design is pretty CONSERVATIVE looking.(Except no exhaust or front grills, it's pretty difficult to note that any Tesla model is an EV but not ICE)

On the other hand, BMW i8 proved a great success for newcomers like Porsche mission E + VW E-bugster.

I'm quite optimistic about the design. Both Marc Newson and Johny Ive (Apple senior designers) are massive car enthusiasts so it might not just end up another frog looking eco car, like Renault.
Dieter Rams has never designed a car so Jony Ive will be all out of ideas on this one

biggrin Very good point!

Steve Jobs is not in the company anymore, I can not see a great product(Car) coming out from that company without his ruthless drive! (But What if Apple buys Tesla, and make Elon Musk CEO instead?)..

Time shall tell wink

Musk @ Applescratchchin I like it, it must take an extremely intelligent and handsome chap to come up with that idea.

The best thing Apple could do would be to Buy Tesla and make Musk the CEO of the whole lot, there is whole generation who can't comprehend how much trouble Apple was in in the 90's and Tim Cook has the Apple Newton days written all over him.

I'm going to perhaps be controversial here, you say "Given the success of Tesla" What defines their success for you?

And the Apple car? Can't see it happening at all. To go from making items which largely have a retail price of a few hundred pounds to a car which will sell at what? £30,000 is a huge risk.

There are so many other markets they could go into before cars with a lower cost of entry and lower risk.

Look at GTech, I know little about them but at the moment they are offering battery powered bikes, vacuum cleaners, garden tools etc.

I'd think more along these lines
They're not interested in those products because there's no opportunity. Been done, little margin, doesn't fit their brand.

As for cars, apple have no experience with IC engines or drive trains, but given we're talking about electric autonomous vehicles there really isn't anything of import to the mass market that can't be outsourced. Suspension, upholstery, wheel bearings, steering linkage etc. The rest? electronics.

Nah, probably just saw that Warren Buffett had bought a load of Apple stock and followed suit.

They assemble cars and make parts as far as I'm aware. They specialise in convertible roofs for example. Main thing is it cuts out the massive capital investment and management

Bugger. It WAS Buffett I read about in the first place. For some reason I wrote Greenspan instead.

Apple...screwing you over since 1990 and striving for more ways to do it.

I won't have anything to do with Apple and anybody who buys a car made by them is exposing himself to financial abuse on a grand scale.

Are they really looking at car development, or is this a sick joke?
Really? I've had iPhones since the 2 and don't feel screwed over in any way. Everything I've ever bought from them has been fine, one issue with a Mac-mini which they sorted out with no fuss.

How have they abused me by providing some good kit and decent back up?

Genuinely interested!
Can you replace the battery yourself?

Can you add an SD card?

Can you get a charging lead from anywhere but Apple?

Can you get a phone with a screen as strong as one all the other manufacturers use?

Everything they do is designed to extract as much £££££ from you as possible.

It's not only the iPhone, my contempt goes back to the early 90s when, if you needed DTP, Apple was the only thing available. £30,000 bought some very basic kit and things like a replacement floppy drive for £500 (might be a slight exaggeration there) stick in my memory to this day.

Once bitten and all that. I won't touch anything that Apple makes and haven't done since those early days of having my pants pulled down.

They have design engineering and manufacturing engineering capabilities, as well as contract manufacturing.
