RE: Audi TT MkII (8J): PH Buying Guide

The MK1 TT was considerably reworked in the suspension dept vs. the Golf. That said, I don't see how anyone could say it was more involving than the MK2.
Whilst correct the general consensus on PH is as per Clarkson's throwaway comment that the TT is a golf in a frock. No amount explaining that the chassis are very different or the suspension/steering components differ appears to change that.
Anyhow on the subject of mk2 TT I've had extensive use of a TTS for 3years. Aside from the steering feeling a tad light the car drove an handles exceptionally well allowing you to exploit a lot of the power in a wide variety of conditions where I wouldnt feel so happy doing so in my Bmw.
My biggest issue was the huge A pillars with high window line which restricted vision, an annoying design feature which is increasingly common on modern designs
Had a MK1 225 cab for 4 years and loved it, it did feel very special and went well once remapped but I'll admit it lacked a cohesive feel. Am seriously considering getting a MK2 V6 Coupe DSG this summer though as my daily and it seems to tick so many boxes. The Z4 Coupe comment has got me thinking though as I love the look of those even more but am not so sure about the ride and interior by comparison. Off to the classifieds...
I believe most people who own a TT on Pistonheads know they are nowhere near the likes of an Elise or Cayman but sometimes you have to compromise for instance the Elise is to low for the other half to get in and the clutch pedal is to heavy on a Cayman for her so the TT is more suitable and having 4wd is safer for her in my eyes.
Obviously she does not mind the 340hp

The dullest car dynamically I've ever owned. Steering - little to no feel. With the magnetic dampers off its still jarringly hard and with them on it feels more compliant and taught, definitely leave it on ! The TTS does not have the ad's 272 hp, in fact its 268. 272 refers to the PS figure. Brakes boil over too quickly and arnt even 4 pot up front. A pillars too large impede visibility. Bose amp in stupid place and gets moist/damp - £1k replacement.
Too much traction for the power given and even when things could get interesting theres too much electronic interference (esr) that cant be turned off 100%. Haldex 4 diff doesnt help matters and the pumps have a habit of 'going', mines gone twice. The Audi dealer network in the SW leaves a lot to be desired.
I should have gone for a more enthusiast / drivers car - z4m / or the purer Cayman S.

Yes, it's to do with expectations.Obviously she does not mind the 340hp
I needed something more practical to go with the Z4 and chopped in a 120d for the TT. Both ex demo, both the same price. A four pot diesel for a 3.2V6. It's been reasonably hassle free, goes well enough and pleasant, and practical, enough to live with.
I think of mine like a modern MGB GT and as much a 'proper sports car' as that was. As you say, comparisons with the Cayman or Elise aren't really useful.
Had a TTS S-Tronic from new in July 2012 and put 67k miles on it and sold it in November 2014 and thought it was a good car overall if a little pricy on services, didn't think much of it at first but got used to its short comings and as a quick daily driver I thought it hit the spot well.
I also thought 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds was impressive for a four pot engine and I even thought it sounded pretty well with the sports exhaust too, the current TTS is really rapid too and I have always liked the way the TT looks.

As far as I was aware PS and HP are the same, the 268 quoted is the BHP.Too much traction for the power given and even when things could get interesting theres too much electronic interference (esr) that cant be turned off 100%. Why do you keep hold of it then? I didn't get on with my M3 and disliked it from early on so I got rid of it and I do empathise because there isn't much more frustrating than running a car you don't like. I would get rid and go for something that you will be happy with.
