Wow! Err. yes actually. But don't let that stop your moral outrage. You just carry on in your ivory tower, making sweeping assumptions. I guess you'd be called a stuck up Prig in the old days.
Prig? fk me, aren't you just a walking dictionary? Sure it's not you that lives in a tower. Did you get the butler to type this? Well, Chumley Warner, I made a direct comparison between two of MY cars that had/have similar mileages and use on the same roads and are/were treated the same. The 166 had not a squeek or rattle, the V70 is riddled. So, I can't "countenance" your experience based upon mine, so we'll have to agree to disagree.

I'm not here to slag off V70 anyway. They are "fine" for a purpose. My original post was to point out that they are not as fast or as robust as many seem to imagine. But mainly my point was that as a SOTW this is as dull as watching paint dry. However, since a lot of PH commenters seem to be obsessed with doing "tip runs" I can see why Shed would play up to that.
Sometimes that's what you want in a shed. I want something boring, dependable, parkable etc. and costs very little to run. I have other cars for fun,so something like this is bloody brilliant.

My "shed" is a W124 Mercedes. No doubt not as interesting as an Alfa but quite frankly, it does all I want of it and a darn sight more.

Looking at the pictures that car is NOT fitted with a geartronic gear box.

Also it is exactly the same automatic gearbox geartronic as the standard unit - it is just a solonoid or a switch to allow gear changes by pushing or pulling gear knob, like a e39 steptronic box.

They are no more prone to failure than the normal box as they are exactly the same... we had the same dribblers on here slag off the Volvo Geartronic box and they had to retreat back to their boxes about this last year.
I thought all Volvo autos of that era suffered from gearbox flare?
Must have sold 150 V70s since 2002 and never had a box issue with one

The box fitted to a V70 will be GM made just you find in an e39 - they will be equivalent except the volvo will be fwd derived and bmw rwd derived
What's all this about then? http://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-s60-v60-10/comp...

It doesn't specify that it's only for Geartronics.

Edit: my Geartronic experiences flare.

This is a V70, not an S60, and I don't think any 5-cyl petrol Volvo qualifies as "white goods". They're too interesting and well-built. Our haste to dispose of stuff is going to have to stop as we exhaust more and more of our resources. It's good environmental sense to keep old barges going.

The only GM box ever fitted in a Volvo was a 4-speed unit on the S80 & I think XC90 T6. It was a dreadful gearbox which is famous for going pop at less than 40k.

All the others since 1999 use a 5-speed Aisin-Warner until 2006 model year when some got a 6-speed AW unit.

Aren't the V70s and S60s basically the same vehicle ignoring rear end?

Environmentally, fine, I'll let you take on the expense when it requires a new gearbox. It just does not make sense to buy and install a new or refurbished gearbox at a cost of £3k(?) when the car originally cost £700. You're welcome to buy it off me for scrap in a year's time, though.

Great Shed!

A run from Peterbough to central London inclusive of town driving averaged an epic 70.4mpg (60mph on the motorway).
Mine used to make wild claims like that smile.

I'd be interested to know what the actual, calculated, consumption was. My display was miles out, but it might just have been my car.
Volvos of that era are notorious for being wildly optimistic. Ours are, too.
Visiting the in laws in Newcastle I calculated from a fill to fill mpg to see if it really was that economical and on that journey I wasn't driving like Miss Daisy (but not breaking speed limits, traffic was moderate), it managed 56mpg over 289 miles. The car indicated 57.1, so slightly out but not too dramatic. When I git 70.4 I really was boring myself, really light throttle and brake use as well as slipstreaming trucks!

Best I ever managed on a tank-tank fill was 50 or so. Over 45000 miles it averaged a real 42. I've bored people on here with it before, but mine over-read by more than 14 mpg smile.
From what others have said, it's a bit random whether you get one that can actually achieve 50 plus or one that just lies about it .

This is working on the assumption that everyone is doing the calculations correctly of course wink

I love seeing this thread as I recently made the decision to buy a family seven seater in order to lug us around without feeling the need to get tetchy about the condition and outright cleanliness of the vehicle (little finger marks on rear windows...).

My search on Autotrader was based on three criteria: 'max £1,000', 'estate' & 'acceleration 0-60mph sub 8 seconds' and was presented with a curve ball that was a beautiful green goddess for £900! My 2.4T SE V70 is 2WD, Manual and has seven seats. It has 160,000 miles and a FULL Volvo service history! So a swift negotiation that day and I picked it up that evening. As a bonus it had a full tank of petrol smile

Immediately, I replaced the fluids, filters, timing belt and front suspension. It is fantastic and does the job perfectly. They are very well made and the thoughtful touches are great, such as the bin bag holder in the rear of the centre console. The seats are comfy and as others have mentioned, the stereo is truly impressive, which I didn't really appreciate until we turned up Florence and the Machine up LOUD and were delighted by the consistency of the performance!

On the motorway, the thing just floats when you get over the ton and is very stable and comfortable too. Additionally, I was amazed that we got back from Glasgow to SW London on just a single tank of petrol! I've never done that before and I hate diesels so have always set myself the petrol car challenge... admittedly, I was stting myself for the last fifteen miles, but the OBC was quite helpful, until it jumped from 'fifteen miles remaining' to an ominous display of '- - -' with about three miles to go. Even after that, it still had five litres remaining in the tank, as I determined by brimming it once again. We have named her Bertha and she's a keeper.

Your 'bin bag holder' is actually for bottles. Just thought you'd like to know. wink

I like the elasticated pockets in the leading edges of the seat cushions. Very handy for bits and pieces.

I should be grateful that you didn't say the elasticated pockets in the leading edges of the seat cushions were a nice touch for long journeys when you needed a pee and you just dangled your appendage securely into the piss pouch.

The bin holder is also referenced in the manual as being suitable to hold bottles also, which underlines my point about how well designed these vehicles are.

True. They have thought about a lot of things. The sun strip, for instance. I think suggesting it's for holding bottles is more an afterthought as the bag clip bit means it really was designed carefully as a bin holder. Otherwise, you could also say it's a marrow holder, an umbrella holder, a book holder, a teddy bear holder etc. biggrin

I had one...

Mine was a 2001 T5 Geartronic bought about three years for £275.00 or something like that. Stuck it through an MOT and it needed something so minor I forget. Drove it for a bit and figured it would explode soon. It then started going in to limp mode so I popped a MAF on it from the breakers. I drove it some more. The gearbox sometimes had a paddy fit. Like an awkward toddler, I chose to simply ignore it's protests and carry on. Somehow, 10 months and 20,000 miles later it was still going and wanted for nothing. I sold it for £700 and it changed hands a few times and it's only just appeared in the local breakers. Still has my ghetto Irn Bru bottle catch tank because I couldn't be arsed to do the breathers. Genuinely saddened to see it meet its fate. Cumbersome, somewhat dull but well built and surprisingly quick big barge. Never did the tip run though.

I know. I have the manual hence knew to find the above pic. But it still sounds like an afterthought.

2.4 turbo 5 pot, with auto box and awd? That'll average in mixed driven around 18-19mpg. Really horrendous mpg.

Performance of a modern 150bhp car (ie. with more gears) but drinks like a 500bhp one.
