Only way I can really imagine is by dropping the thing onto its end...can't see it happening in the car.

Hard hit in the rear would do that too

Yeah? Not saying you're wrong, as I don't know, but I'd expect damage to be between the input shaft (where presumably the impact would be transmitted) and the mounting points - the damaged bit isn't attached to anything.?

I have a theory on how it may have got damaged.

The chassis mount plate/bush has always been very bent/damaged, so wonder if it could have bottomed out on a speed bump etc and pushed the box into the chassis?

However there is no obvious damage to chassis etc.

Anyway have just picked up a 06 box with around 50K miles (although no evidence of this) for £320. which seemed good value (as long as it works!!)

I believe these later boxes also have stronger carbon tipped gears, and lower ratio lower gears, so more acceleration?

Will probably take me another month for installation, if its anything like the ball ache of removal!!

Am i likely to get anything for my old box on eBay? or straight to the scrappy?

Stick it on eBay, somebody might want the internals or to use the case as a template ?

Good News!!

All back together, and she works better than ever!

The gear shift is so smooth, took a nice drive into wales yesterday and the smile is still on my face smile

The only issue is there is still a metallic rattle somewhere, which comes at random times, usually when slowing down, but also happens if i rev from idle it will rattle when the revs are coming down.
Im thinking/hoping this is something like the exhaust rattling against a heat shield etc.

I'm pleased your sorted.

I hate random rattles, I had one on overrun, for all the world it sounded like the transmission. Turned out to be a worn throttle linkage!!

Try and get the car up on a ramp, with someone in the driving seat.

Unfortunately they are nothing but cowboys. Very convincing on the phone as whoever I talked to was extremely professional - Then they pick your car up. I only had one gear and it really wasn't driveable. Cue some bloke turning up pretending to wait for a non-existent tow-truck then him having a fake phone call regarding the tow truck can't get to my location due to traffic, and for my car to be driven to the location where the tow truck is. No tow truck. Car was driven 30 miles to somewhere in sidcup, destroying the clutch.

£1500 later I get a gearbox & completely knackered CV joints as they have somehow managed to fit the gearbox incorrectly - (Ford Fiesta) - By using the wrong bolts it simply would not mate to the engine correctly - Then they say that the wrong bolts were already fitted to my car and that I had been informed by phone. None of this is true.

Lots more happened which I won't go in to - Just lookup his previous on this website

Then lookup the company directors on Companies House, then Belwood Auto Spares. 15k owed to other poor souls.
