Yesterday afternoon I was travelling down the A1. I was overtaking an HGV and was almost clear of it when it pulled out. His front wheel hit my rear passenger side, spun me flat against the front of his cab, and I travelled sideways down the A1 for what seemed an eternity. The police attended and closed the road, and told me that the Romanian driver had no blind spot mirror enabling him to see me as I was alongside.

Anyway, a very lucky escape, but is this likely to be a write off? The car is an S1, less than a year old and has done about 11,000 miles. Remarkably the airbags did not deploy.

Depends if the chassis, floor or roof is bent. I'm not sure if the S1 panels are different from the standard A1, if so the cost of replacing them might right it off.

Be honest though, do you really want it back? I'd be in two minds after an impact like this, no matter how much I liked the car.

Edit: - Glad you're ok thumbup

LHD lorry? That could get messy I guess with the insurance.

It may be.

It doesn't look like there's any damage to the sills, and if the airbags didn't deploy.

That plus the value of the car, I can see that getting repaired.

I think they'll repair it the repair won't cost more than a third of the cars worth.

It's a very high spec car which I'd be lucky to find again nearly new, and would have to wait ages for if I ordered new.

pick wisely where you want your car to go. first choice would be back to Audi and insist everything is replaced, not repaired.

once the cost of parts starts to add up, it may be too prohibitive to repair. depends what the sills / floor pan is like. have you looked under it yet ? any kinks ? may just be panel damage in that case it will be repaired and put back like new.

worst case, if its gets written off, you can get something a little less girly ! smile

I have had my eye on an Audi RS Q3. Is that any better?

Whats with the S1 hate on here? I loved the one I drove... just couldn't justify the price!

I think you may be okay, providing it goes to Audi./Approved bodyshop. The windows look like they havent broken or moved so It could just be panel damage.

Also, how does insurance work here?

The rear window is broken, and the passenger side door window is stuck 3/4 up, as presumably the door is bent...

This comes across light-hearted, but it's hardly a joke though is it? We allow foreign drivers in foreign lorries to drive over here without properly enforcing minimum safety equipment and driving standards and this is the result: an accident that 99.99% would not have happened had it been: a RHD lorry; a properly equipped LHD lorry; or an appropriately cautious/observant/well-trained driver in a LHD lorry.

Has the lorry driver at least been given a FPN?

Also, don't think it's helpful or realistic to blame the guy's nationality. Plenty of homegrown numpties on the roads without worrying about the small proportion of imported ones.

Pretty superficial damage all-told, if the panelling is all replaced does it matter?

From just the body damage, I would say it would be repaired.

But, would any damage occur to the wheels, wheel studs, bearings, gearbox, etc..., from going sideways, while presumably still being under load.

Chap I used to work with was caught up in an almost identical incident, except he was driving a Peugeot 106 (he walked away uninjured). He was hit by a RHD lorry with British driver. It's not a question of 'foreign' / LHD, it's a question of observation of the road before changing lanes. It's also why I hang back before overtaking a lorry until I'm sure I can pass completely, not have to remain alongside a truck for any length of time.

more than likely the drivers license is outside the EC so plod wont be able to do anything. are they going hold him and take him to court ? not likely. too much paperwork and not a serious enough accident ( luckily for the OP / driver ). he will be on his merry way now. probably little damage to his front end bar a bit of broken plastic.

remember, all the cheap goods in the shops need to get here as cheaply as possible.
