Colleague one today complained that has car had failed its MOT just as she was wanting to trade it in against a much fancier one (despite constantly complaining how she struggles to make ends meet financially)
What did it fail on? A totally bald tyre. When I questioned why she hadn't even given the tyres a cursory visual glance even once a week, she scoffed and said that's her husband's job.
She carries her child in the car every day, and seemed put out about having to pay for a new tyre (a normal hatchback tyre is not exactly expensive) but not about endangering lives.
I despair.
Colleague two then mentioned how she'd had to pour warm water on her windscreen this morning to clear the frost. When informed that this was a brilliant way to shatter the windscreen she asked what else she was supposed to do?
When I replied that a scraper is generally meant for that kind of thing, she shuddered and replied "those things go right through me".
I despair.
Had almost an identical conversation with a young mother about a year ago. She was all pissed off because her dad had a go at her for driving around with 3 or 4 bald tyres. She was saying it didn't matter as she only drove slowly (it was the middle of winter) What did it fail on? A totally bald tyre. As for clearing the windscreen I used to use teped water, which always worked fine unless it was so cold it instantly froze again.

My brother, who used to be fairly sensible, rang me last Sunday to ask me which brake fluid to use to top up hos brake master cylinder. He the told me he'd been topping it up for weeks as it was leaking "somewhere"I suggested he get it looked at ASAP and he said he wasn't worried as he only does about 6 miles a day.
Ah that's okay then. Limited opportunity to kill yourself and others.

Stop using water to clear windscreens ffs. Hot water actually freezes faster than cold!
We are referring to warm water (poster mentioned 30-40 degree differential). It's actually water at boiling temperature which freezes faster, known as the Mpemba effect. Even still, the phenomena is not fully accepted even under scientific conditions so I hardly think it would matter with a windscreen.Talking to a chap at work today, he asked if I got my kit car running. I said yeah, all good. Need to get it to the dyno to get the map looked at. His reply, what's wrong with the map? Can't you just get one from the petrol station?
My boss has a new Merc c something diesel. She moaned the other day about needing 2 new rear tyres after 6000 miles. I said what the fk have you been doing to it? She said that it just wheel spins all the time and an orange light flashes on the dash. It doesn't come on when I'm cruising. Actually, I need to get the garage to have a look and see what the light is. Again.

I despair.Scraping the screen takes about the same amount of time as the demister takes to clear the inside, so it's not even wasting any time.
Scraping the windscreen? Sooooooo last century, daaaaaahlings!
(Ford Mondeo - start car, push button on dash, and allow the modern miracle that is "Electricity" to do the work, front, rear, and door mirrors. Occasionally, when there's a particularly sharp frost, I have to scrape a couple of inches of screen near the 'A' pillars, and the headlight/indicator lens)
Yeah, yeah! I know. 'diesel Ford Mondeo' = 'Non-petrolhead'

I don't start the engine and demist. The car is rather noisy so I just start up slip into gear and slope off as quietly as possible. I find if you shut the HVAC off before you stop the car it closes all the vents and the inside doesn't mist Scraping the screen takes about the same amount of time as the demister takes to clear the inside, so it's not even wasting any time.
A watering can full of hot water takes the same amount of time to fill as it does to walk to the front of the drive open the gates and walk back to the kitchen, dump it on the car - job done.
