Ok, I need to get this rant off my chest and Pistonheads has to be the perfect place.

What is this countries fking obsession with 40mph??? I only have a short commute to work (15 miles) but most of it is nice flowing A roads with a NSL on them. However, enjoying them is just impossible because it seems EVERYONE wants to do 40! Not 50, not 45 but 40.... everywhere! Most of these cretins carry on at 40 through the villages, past schools, in the snow, dark, light, etc. It seems whatever the condition, whatever the road, 40mph is the chosen speed by 90% of the 'people' I share these roads with. Now, if everyone is happy doing 40, why the need for a car? A moped will do 40 and cost a lot less to run. Furthermore, mopeds are easier to pass! A pushbike isn't far off this speed and you can actually keep fit as well, so why not buy one of them? You can even save the planet at the same time if that's your thing.

I know someone will be along in a minute to tell me it's a limit not a target and all that bullst, but come on if you can't drive at 60mph on a clear, open road and then slow down to 30mph through a village you should have your driven license taken away and dropped in a vat of acid.

To add insult to injury, some of these halfwits think 40mph must be the speed limit, because if I overtake them they flash their headlights. I didn't realise it was the new speed limit and also illegal to overtake them?

I'm feeling annoyed writing this and I'm also sure someone will tell me to calm down and I will only save 2 minutes by sitting behind them but why can't someone tell THEM they will gain 5-10 minutes by driving properly? It's not about that anyway for me, I enjoy driving, I enjoy a nice smooth flowing drive. Following a line of nuggets at 40mph who still feel the need to brake on every bend is not smooth and not enjoyable. Just be better!
It's the flashing after a perfectly legal overtake that really makes my blood boil.

We should do this more often. Someone posts a response, then someone else writes a rant to fit the response.

Don't come to Dorset then, you'll blow a gasket within 2 miles. I have a few ideas why some people might do it:
  • It's the slowest speed most cars can manage in top gear, maybe they're afraid their car will explode if they exceed 1800rpm
  • Perhaps they don't bring their varifocals for driving so can't see any of the instruments and just guess how fast they're going
  • Maybe they're rabid planet-huggers or tightwads and just try to hypermile everywhere, but aren't very good at it hence the constant random braking

The OP was late due to being held up by someone doing 40 on the internet.

Don't worry - the NSL that leads to our village is frequented by numpties who can't get past 35, and break for bends that are effortless at 60 or more. Some live in the village. One 'challenged' me a couple of weeks back as I'd done my usual thing and overtaken them. My explanation of, "you're doing 35 in a 60 limit, what do you expect?", was met with utter bemusement. Explained NSL, numpty seemed to get it smile Found same numpty on same road a few days later, doing 35 (being fair, they drive a 1990s 306d - it probably can't go much quicker). Can you guess what I did next? That's right, it was overtake time again smile

The moral of the story - when encountering slow moving numpties in NSL sections, have fun by seeing how many you can overtake on your journey. Just ignore the headlight flashing, there's nothing illegal about overtaking them.

People that flash as you overtake them are the same ones using the cruise control 1mph at a time to change from 40 back to 60.

I suspect that much of the reason is that NSL roads don't have a 60 sign. Now I know that NSL is more complicated than that due to different classes of road and of vehicle, but the vast majority of 40-everywhere drivers are in cars. They are in a numbered limit, then there is a mysterious black and white sign with no comforting numbers on it. Does it mean watch out for black bars? 45-degree slopes? It may mean nothing, or it may mean that's your lot for speed limit signs for a while so carry on based on the last one you remember.

It's the flashing after a perfectly legal overtake that really makes my blood boil.

I cant handle the lights flashing after an overtake, I have to try and find out what their issue is, I cant just leave it.

They're just saying thank you for a nicely executed overtake. At least that's what I always assume it means smile

These are the same people that usually have to make a firm application of the brakes every time they pass an oncoming vehicle in the other direction, or encounter a minor deviation in the direction of the road.

OP obviously hit 88 mph when overtaking the 40 mph dawdler, only rational explanation.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. This makes my fking blood boil every fking morning. I do a 10 mile stretch with almost no opportunity to overtake, 2 short 30 zones and other than that everyone could go 60. But no, it's got to be a steady 40 all the way, on the open road, as well as right past a bloody school. s.

It's the old thing of 'everyone going slower than me is an idiot and anyone going faster than me is a maniac'. Obviously they think they are right in whatever speed and by disagreeing with them in the form of a legal overtake is seen by them as you saying 'fk you, you can't drive'.
