I blame the current obsession with MPG.

Especially now as many cars have a 'real time' MPG readout. I think the rise in the 40mpher is down to them focusing on said readout.

I'm in Shropshire and its absolutely abysmal for what the OP has described - knowing the roads well and having a fast accelerating car help considerably. I find when you go over the border into Wales things don't speed up considerably but people do seem to more graciously facilitate others overtaking as opposed to actively hindering and reacting angrily.
Up in Scotland they do it well smile

I was just about to add 'and Scotland too...' as whenever I've been up there NSL roads are generally traversed at 60-70mph and somebody doing 40mph will invariably just be passed by everyone else. You can watch each driver ahead of you perform their overtake.

Whereas where I'm from, this is extremely unusual. One 40mph-er swiftly leads to a procession, of which every single participant then reacts badly if anyone has the audacity to try and pass.

I've also noticed in Scotland and Wales a common tendancy for slower moving drivers to indicate left when its safe and clear for you to pass - essentially the opposite behaviour of the flashing brigade.

I do think the English semi-rural counties are the worst - or in the case of Shropshire I think there's just a lot of retired folk who have moved to the area from towns. People whose everyday livelihood depends on a rural A/B road network tend to have a much better sense of making progress and that is why I think large rural areas detached from the motorway / dual carriageway network are much better.

I don't know why so many people seem to be in such a hurry nowadays.

And it's not just on the roads either. Among the worst are commuters on the Underground. They're always rushing around like there's no tomorrow, and they actually expect people to stand on the right going down the escalators, just like sheep, so that they can go charging past at breakneck speed. And it could quite literally be breakneck speed - they just need to trip once and it could be all over for them and possibly for some other innocent party who happens to be in their way.
After all, there's normally a train every couple of minutes, so it's not the end of the world if they miss one.
Well, I don't see why I should meekly stand on the right to allow these maniacs a smooth passage, so I stand on the left if I feel like it - after all, I'm not breaking any laws and probably saving a few of them from their own recklessness.
But many of them get very upset with me, and actually start swearing at me. To which I reply, "No speekee eengleesh"

But hang on, people don't behave like I've just described, do they?
In fact, they probably wouldn't dream of it.

So why do they drive at 40mph on the roads?

Well when you are recently retired, you have no need to drive any faster, you have all the time in the world to enjoy the scenery and our beautiful countryside.

Good, so I'm not the only one who got confused there.

All dual carriageways are 70 mph regardless of the number of lanes aren't they?
Please tell me you're kidding?

I rarely see other cars overtaking these days on a single lane carriageway, I do it all the time and get the reactions that people have mentioned, I've had wagging fingers/flashed lights, people drifting over the white line as I'm going past and blasting their horn etc...

Large numbers of people seem to have adopted/transferred the British "queue" mentality into every day driving and they think that some how you're queue jumping by overtaking. I think that has also lead to a rise in tailgating as people won't get past they just want to push the car in front to go faster...

All very odd.

I cant handle the lights flashing after an overtake, I have to try and find out what their issue is, I cant just leave it.
I like the ones who aren't satisfied with a quick flash after being overtaken. No, these special sorts pursue me as quickly as possible to continue the flashing and gesticulation assault, 3" off my bumper.

They were perfectly happy to dribble around corners and meander along at 40 just prior to the overtake. F'ckin oddballs.

As you say, if you try and stop these people to see what their problem is, they usually speed off with nothing to say. F'ckin oddballs.
You know the ones that get me is the tossers who then chase you, flashing their lights so angry they even flash blue lights, making all sorts of wailing noises, then attempt to overtake me, and gesticulating at me as they try to overtake. mad
And those ones in the big red trucks - they really get annoyed.
Don't get me started about them! Who do they think they are? Like their appointment is more important than everyone else's!? I just drive towards the centre of the road while keeping on my side so there's no possible way for their aggressively-driven vehicle to get past. They will have to be patient like everyone else. It's 30 for a reason!!!

This happened to me there as well. There are two routes to my gym, one along a NSL road by the airport, and the other through town.

So I'm coming up to the NSL turn off doing 30 and a guy pulls out in front of me into it too, causing me to lose momentum and have to brake to 5mph. He then trundles up to 35 and sits there all along the NSL road and through town when it becomes a 30 zone!

But this is all part an parcel of the fact that everyone's treating me differently now that I have a 325ti, the hate for BMW drivers is real!

I was thinking exactly the same thing just the other day.
