Good post. thumbup

I enjoyed my integrale and I'd have another, but something grates about all of these "special edition" variants which really aren't anything more than a different colour of paint. hehe

Indeed an excellent post!! Very informative!

I do share your distaste for these special editions, just a marketing ploy, buy hey ho, I'm sure it did the trick for the manufacturers that produced them.

Back on topic, the head would say the Scooby for all the aforementioned reasons, but the heart for me says the Lancia. It looks far more dramatic, but in a more acceptable way than Scooby's are percieved for their relative era.

Integrale such an evocative car which i'm not sure the 22B will ever be, that being said the rarity of the 22B must in some ways put it ahead in the desirability stakes and for sure in investment terms. I loved my integrale but in standard form it wasn't really that quick, an extra 60 hp brought it alive I think. The steering was and still is stuff of legend and it's probably the most fun and exciting drive I've ever had in the wet, but, and it is a big 'but' my god are they fragile, it spent a lot of time and money being looked after.

Ref the 996 GT3, the engine alone is reason enough to by one, 22b and integrale will never hold a candle to it on that front imo.

Cross country sweeping well surfaced 'A' road GT3 every time, any B road or slightly greasy conditions Integrale, 22B would love to try one.

If you want something for the PlayStation generation to throw their money at that's currently cheap so you can make a fat profit get the 22B or a Tommi Makkinen EVO.

If you want to be able to turn up at the local golf course & not get scorned at get the Lancia.

If you want an ASBO get an Escort Cosworth.

Personally I like the Ford.

The other issue is finding a really sorted, well maintained Integrale. So many have either sat around doing nothing or have been maintained on the cheap, hence all the problems that many have reported. The unused one above would still need a fortune spent on it to get it into top notch order. Given that straight line speed isn't the big draw with an Integrale, the suspension needs to be thoroughly refreshed in my opinion to get the best out of the car.

Having been looking at a few different cars lately it's amazing how few have full service history, which I thought was a must with any older car. Dealers must keep finding people who don't care too much about stuff like that, amazing in itself. On average a 22B will have been better looked after, as have most of the special edition Integrales. The search goes on. I'd still love to find a mint 16v as I think they are the prettiest of all. I personally love the late 80's alcantara interior and the Evo cars are no faster (being heavier). But I just can't find a really good one. I have seen one 16v that looks absolutely amazing but it's been in Florida and is now on its way to Spain. It's very cheap and looks a bit too good to be true. The ad has also disappeared. The hassle of viewing in Spain and having to put a lot of trust in the dealer is just an extra headache.

Dealing with people like Steve at Walkers is just immediately reassuring, it's clear that they know the cars inside and out. Many of the other UK dealers are all a bit 'innit bruv' which has the opposite effect.

I'm going to see a few Evo 1s which I still think offer better value than the Evo 2 cars. Much as I like the red cam cover, it's not worth another £10-£15k for me.

Saw a few 'grales today. They are tiny but such pocket exotics, with such evocative details inside and out, they really are special cars. They ooze presence and stance. Absolutely stunning cars. Desirability is off the charts for me.

I'm sure nostalgia is playing its part but micro dimensions only adds to the appeal for me. There was a 458 Speciale nearby and that looked absolutely vast, excessively so in direct comparison.

I'm in favour an Evo 1 at the moment over the 22B even though I see more potential from a financial point of view in the 22B. Things are likely to get pretty rocky soon for a lot of people so I'm likely to be stuck with whatever I end up with. I seriously have no problem with that if it's either of these two monumentally cool cars. The 22B is a really special car thing in all respects but is more similar to my Evo VI, so the Integrale would better compliment what I already own. As long as it behaved itself I just don't think I'd ever stop smiling.

The biggest downside is turning down the rare chance to own a 22B.... aaaarrgggh... I really need to get a job hosting the Tonight Show and a big warehouse in LA!

Only one of these two greats is a legend and you got it wrong.

Even though technically I cannot choose between the two, if I was being brutal and I mean brutal I'd side with an Integrale based only on the decision that they just look so different and a 22b looks a 'bit' like a STI 5 or 6 type R with wide arches.

Sorry 22b I still love you!

Tell you what though I saw a lot of rare and interesting cars just sat in storage not for sale which was quite a sad sight. Presumably owned by people who are more interested in making money than driving cars. Batmobile 190 Evo Merc, R5 Turbo, 2 final edition Integrales (in addition to the four that were for sale) various beetles, Ferraris all sat there gathering dust.

Ooohhh, 190 EvoII, now we're talking wink

Only joking, best of luck with the Integrale, and as long as you're buying for the correct reasons like you say, and get the right car, then I don't think you can go wrong whatever happens the classic market

Integrale for me, I don't care how rare the subaru is, I still can't get past the image.

The Lancia on the over hand, I'd be happy to drive that around without feeling like I'm an old fart with an Asbo. To me the Lancia is like an old italian supercar, the subaru is far from it.

The scoob, all day long. At least its got a bit of ooomph and the steering wheel on the correct side.

Was taken out in an integrale once, owner trying to show me just how fast it was, which it really wasn't. Bad experience.

An extra 60bhp is just a chip and an exhaust away. It's criminal not to do it. As has been said, it makes the car come alive.

Personally I'd choose the Subaru, easier to source parts for, a wider audience for when it comes to sell it and generally I think it would offer a better all round experience. Tough to choose between the two though, because intergrowlers are very very nice...
The panels on the 22B are bespoke though. I recall a Scoobynetter who was facing having his written off by the insurance company because they couldn't source a pair of front wings. I believe a bunch of owners were going to club together to get a set of moulds made so the bespoke parts could be re-created in carbon fibre if necessary.

I note the smiley and that is true. smile But having driven various exotica over the years, I have never received as much attention (all positive) as in the Lancia.

Personally I'd opt for the Integrale. However you have missed the boat somewhat. So I'd sit it out until the property market, stock market and classic car industry take a massive crash in one synchronised correction.

Not making it any easier, from 0.52 onwards:

It may not have been rallied competitively by Subaru but if Colin McRae bought one with his own money I don't think endorsements come any better than that!

then there's this:

that actual car is for sale at 22B money too...
