Yes this ^

Today I will drive the Millennium Falcon to work and come home with a V16 BRM sound please :-)

Seriously- Diesel cars will always struggle to sound good because they have to comply with car laws and regulations. Good sounding diesels can be found where the rules are far more relaxed, Trains and Industrial vehicles are a start but some Power boats and Dragsters (aka "Rolling Coal") are proper dirty sounding.

Ah...
You're getting confused Winnie. Edo's the bald small bloke with the inferiority complex who doesn't understand that a diesel's torque at the crank is of no consequence and its torque at the wheels that counts....

I think my diesel sounds good. Sounds a bit more throaty and aggressive now it's on a bigger turbo.

Also the Audi SQ5. In real life, sounds like a mustang. I thought it was something muscley and american, looked up and was surprised to see a big black Audi driving past.

Not read the whole thread but, for me...

Diesels sound good?

Compared to an AMG V8/M-Power Straight-6/Ferrari V8/V12.....no.
Compared to a 4-pot version of the same car, yes (in 6-cylinder guise).

Some of the higher spec oil-burners are starting to sound OK (35d/40d, RR V8 or the Audi/Porsche BiTurbo units) have a pleasant enough note, especially once on the go. Plus the cars in question offer so much sound deadening that you can't hear the engine anyway.

But for some, the noise will always be purely unacceptable.

We have an Audi TT diesel with the fake engine sound speaker thing. From inside the car it sounds nice when you're pushing it - not diesely at all. I usually drive from inside the car, so that suits me fine!

That's interesting, i am considering ordering a TT diesel to replace my SLK diesel as a daily driver. I've never even sat in one but that's good to know it makes the right sounds inside.

I know many people hate the synthetic sound thing but if it improves my enjoyment of the car even a wee bit i couldn't care less if others don't like it because it's not 'pure' enough. I have a V8 to solve that issue. smile

The 6 pot diesels of the Germanic breeds have the best diesel sound, not sure I would go as far as to say they sound 'nice'.
If we call a V12 F1 engine (perhaps also the V10) the pinnacle of what an NA can sound like (although some big bikes both Harley and Ducati sound immense) and I would say for blown engines we have strong contenders from Subaru (2.0 boxer 4) and Audi (5 pot) in WRC guise then frankly diesels sound totally st, the best thing a manufacturer can do for their diesel cars is aim to remove the percussion at idle and mute it so it sounds like a gentle hum at revs.

Interesting topic ha!

I just can't like diesel sounds am afraid, so yes a single minded PHer who cannot accept all is good and like something in everything and instead have a negative view on something I do not like ;-)

For me its not just a snap shot of noise, its the theatre of driving. The increasing sound in petrol as you open the throttle, the fact that you can rev right up through the range with multiple tones, the diesel just sounds as a case of theatre, a bit flat.

As for piping noise in, you can pipe a 1990s F1 car noise into the cabin of a 1 litre economy petrol engine to make it sound good, but its almost irrelevant, its the audible equivalent of covering your car in HKS, Blitz etc. stickers when you source all your gear from Halfords ;-)

Have we had the V10 out of the Touareg yet? I like how that sounds.
Good call, i had a shot of my bosses a few weeks ago. As well as being bloody quick in a straight line, it was surprisingly nimble down twisty b-roads too.

I was pretty surprised when I had a diesel Macan S as a courtesy car - the sports exhaust that was fitted to the car made it sound pretty good when it was pushing on a bit..

A couple of others have posted about the Land Rover Td5 engine sounding sweet with the right exhaust and I'd be inclined to agree. Although only at the lower end of the rev range. I'd never admit it to him as a Land Rover fan biggrin but my mates old Land cruiser sounded pretty decent too but that had a custom 3" exhaust fitted to it.

I've never driven a diesel where when gently slowing approaching a roundabout I'll want to drop it into 2nd gear and have the engine rev down from near the redline - as it will sound very unpleasant

whilst even with a fairly rubbish petrol engine the same excercise is pleasant
