You can still hear the diesel engine clatter at idle inside in a 6 series and at low revs but sat at 70mph it's genuinely hard to tell what pump it uses.

My 4 pot Mercedes diesel sounded good everytime I drove it.

It was earning me money.
I had a 6 pot diesel merc E class drive by me the other day while I was on foot and I actually thought how well it sounded and I didn't expect that from a diesel.

I had a TD5 defender with no boxes, just straight pipe turbo back and that sounded great, loads of whistling and 5cyl gurgle

Agreed, I was half tempted by a E350CDi Mercedes a couple of weeks ago, the engine was very refined even on tick over, but don't do enough miles now to warrant a diesel so bought an SL350 instead.

I had a BMW 5 series E60 with the 3 litre engine a few years ago and thought that sounded pretty good. Nice growl under acceleration, but quiet when cruising at speed. That went in for warranty work a few times and BMW loaned me a 4 cylinder diesel 3 series each time. They were pretty quiet and fuel efficient, but I can't say that I enjoyed the noise much.

No. At best, they sound not too unpleasant.

The main problem is that 4 cyl diesels are plain nasty, and they must account for 95% of dervs on the road.

According to our local VW dealer yes they can. He even demonstrated it by revving the arse of the GTD while telling us it sounds as good and goes better than the GTI I actually wanted to look at.

Given it was a company car deal, the tax break would be better on the GTD so agreed a run in it to test. While out he the. Waxed lyrical on the 'speed' benefits over the lesser petrol.. There's no wonder so any uneducated people drive around in dervs nowadays!

The best sounding diesel is a Deltic, 18 cylinder, supercharged, 1650 bhp at about 1500 RPM.
It is assembled out of multiple banks of opposing cylinders arranged in a triangular configuration.

And it sounds like this:

(you don't get the full effect until near the end so skip past the first 30 secs)

The straight 6 in a 90's patrol sounds very well in my opinion.

I'm sorry, that's dreadful! Plus the particulate filter or something is blocked or needs cleaning! What an awful spectacle!

If you like a bit of turbo whistle then the sound of the two Napier turbos on a class 56 are hard to beat. They deafened me as a child but it was totally worth it. Even if turbos aren't your thing the 250litre 3250bhp V16 has a nice warble to it.

Nothing wrong with the sound of a 5 or 6 cylinder diesel engine.
Ive got to admit my old Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel sounded superb when being revved. Shame it let itself down when idling.

My 300hp Audi A6 3.0tdi storyline avant with 7speed paddle shift has a volume control on the twin exhausts. On the computer you select car then systems then settings then exhaust note and when turned up if you change about 3 to 4 thousand revs it howls like an F1 car. Pees off the boy racers with their big exhausts also nippy, the book says 0to 60 in 5.0 and 163 mph topend. On and its an Audi so zero emissions: D

Like it but 850NM is less than a P1.
