Can diesels sound good?

Not sure if anyone would have the sound a car makes, high up on the list if buying a diesel. Generally the quieter the better, would be the best sound for a diesel?
Absolutely. You would want to draw your neighbours attention to the fact that you couldn't afford a petrol.....

I wouldn't know where to start ?Blacked out front windows : illegal
DPF removal : illegal (and stupid)
One hand at the top of the wheel : brilliant
Side boards : chav
But the noise is not too bad actually so all is not lost !

If you think they sound the same as your average railbus then you're in no position to be giving advice on engine sounds. Simples
If I could just pitch in on the 'battle of the bobble hats', when I was a kid one of the things that stuck in my mind about catching the train was the sound of the Valenta-engined HSTs. Insane turbo noise! Also there are some good animations online of how the Deltic engine works, interesting if you're into engineering.Raine Man said:

This thread is about diesel engine sounds; you get your free issue bobble hat on the door..Lowtimer said:
The best sounding diesel is a Deltic, 18 cylinder, supercharged, 1650 bhp at about 1500 RPM.
The Deltic is a lovely machine, but the Detroit Diesel V6 two stroke has to be the ultimate diesel sound IMO, even better than the V8 and V12 versions.Evolved said:
According to our local VW dealer yes they can. He even demonstrated it by revving the arse of the GTD while telling us it sounds as good and goes better than the GTI I actually wanted to look at.
Given it was a company car deal, the tax break would be better on the GTD so agreed a run in it to test. While out he the. Waxed lyrical on the 'speed' benefits over the lesser petrol.. There's no wonder so any uneducated people drive around in dervs nowadays!
Let me guess, he didn't have a GTI in for you to drive but had this GTD that he had to shift by the end of the month!Given it was a company car deal, the tax break would be better on the GTD so agreed a run in it to test. I would if i'm honest. Why buy a boring 4 pot when you could get a V6 that sounds pretty good and will still get good mpg. But hopefully i'll never be in a situation where I need a dieseledo said:
My wife has a twin turbo V8 Diesel in the Cayenne. Sounds great - nice woofle esp. when it starts.. 850nm (more than a P1) and 385bhp. Goes ok too...

626lb/ft of torque. That's insane!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5gq_-ErTQA

Without knowing the gearing of the vehicle, the figure is of no consequence. Diesels need tall gearing to cover the necessary road speed, because they have a rev range as narrow as a mosquitoes testicle. They loose the multiplying effect of lower gearing that petrol cars have. The original Nick the Greek said:

I didn't expect you to understand. You don't have the intellect. The point stands. Let's see if you can use Google to come up with an educated answer....Willy Nilly said:

Oh do grow up you tedious little man. Get back to your torque monster 1 series, there's a good lad.
You still don't get it do you Eddie? Don't know how to work Google? If you'd wanted a fast Cayenne you'd have got the missus the Turbo S rather than the one that fills up at the same pump as Transit vans. But then, I really don't give a st if a little bald bloke with an inferiority complex on the interweb struggles to have a cogent thought....
"my missus" bought her own car. It's the 21st century. She has a job and everything. We preferred the way the turbo V8 Diesel goes, it's as quick as the turbo in the real world and does 30mpg all day long. If you hate diesel as much as you appear to, why are you in a thread about diesels?
Not quite sure how you decided I was bald, or for that matter what possible relevance it might have. Have a nice evening.
