The Department for Transport (DfT) intends to retain the requirement on insurers to destroy the registration document for vehicles that have sustained structural damage and where the cost of commercial repair would exceed the value of the vehicle when repaired, and declared a total write off. This will ensure that only category C vehicles get back on the road.
So if you have a classic which may not be that badly damaged but would exceed it's current value you're no longer going to be allowed to repair it frown
Is that the intention?
Precisely. The only way you could keep the car and have it back on the road is not to claim on your insurance and repair it yourself.
Do you mean claim through the third party insurer?

It seems to be a strange thought process altogether
Out of 942,000 checks only 40 cases of fraud were detected
Surely that's the outcome of successful scheme assuming reducing fraud is the goal
In the same way if speed cameras were successful they'd detect very few people speeding - if reducing speed is the goal.
yes I thought this was a flawed premise at the time.

I guess the intention is simply to enforce the ABI guidelines.

Enforcing effectively what are private company "guidelines" via a government body.

Doesn't sound remotely dubious.

When you say DVSA have said this - do you have a link or quote where they have said this?
Abolition of the Vehicle Identity Check (This is a link to a PDF document from www.legislation.gov.uk).

On page 5:
Abolition of the Vehicle Identity Check said:
There will also be a number of consequential changes to the regulations including ensuring that Cat A and B vehicles are unable to acquire a new registration document and get back on the road.
Is this as a consequence of the shell being crushed it the abi standard is followed, ie no chassis to register against, but if you have the whole car then no problem with dvla ?

Hi I have bought a cat b c63 125 spec car 2013 model with logbook service history, mot, and was taxed.

I checked with Dvla and they stated all ok.

The car was stolen recovered in 2013 after it was sold to first owner, the car was stripped of front end bolt on parts ,interior and wheels.

The person I bought it from bought car in 2015 bought parts and had the car put back on the road.

Only thing wrong is that the electric seats don’t work as when thieves took out the seats they cut the wires instead of unplugging.

Otherwise car is great ,goes like a rocket.

In what way.

This was 2 years ago.

If it is a Cat B the current V5 becomes null and void, a new one will never be issued.

Therefore you can't tax the car and therefore you can't put it on the road.

It says V5 present.

There is no V5 as it is cancelled as soon as the insurers class it as a CatB.

I'm keen to know also

Cat Bs have always been able to be re registered, but for those that don't know, the DVSA has said they'll no longer issue log books for Cat A and B - since VIC requirement removed - hence the OP question

Watching this one
So what if you've brought a car then find out after that it's a cat B but you've been able to insure it and DVLA have given it road tax but mot isn't due til a few months time, then what?
