I'm sure BMW can come up with another way to do those buttons than a copy and paste throughout the range set of buttons like that

And those round things that they insist on putting in every car. I'm sure there is a better way to steer?
And those funny pedal things on the floor? I'm sure there is a better way to accelerate and brake.
And those TV screen things. Copy/Pasted across the range. Ridiculous.
Same as those doors, how lazy to have doors on every model. Where's the innovation?

If thats the worst thing you can hate a car for, you need therapy wink

Any ideas for them?

The 'virtual cockpit' in my Audi is a lot less fussy and easier to use. So far it's been more reliable, too.

How about not having a virtual cockpit full dash dials and putting those dumb stuck on plastic rings to avoid them having to have adjustable dials?
The D4 A8 has 1-6 numbers on the finger-writing pad when not in use for preset radio stations, if made a little larger this could be an easily implementable alternative
Oh no wait they can't copy and paste that from a 1 series into a 7 series

A 'virtual cockpit' is easier than a one-touch button...? Really?

Surprisingly so. Off the top of my head I'd say because the mfsw functions are more as you'd expect, and fewer everyday function are via the i drive.

I thought the BMW set up looked very dated too tbh.

So, in my old BMW, if I wanted to call my wife, I just had to press the number 1 button (not even touching iDrive). How would I do it with a the Audi Virtual cockpit?

FWIW,

If I wanted to call home I just pressed button number 2
If I wanted to set the Sat Nav for home I just pressed button number 3
If I wanted to set sat nav for my office I just pressed button number 4
If I wanted to set the local radio station I just pressed button number 5
If I wanted to set the car to max cool I just pressed button number 6
etc ....

How would I do all of those, more simply, with a virtual cockpit. genuinely intrigued.

I’ve got Virtual Cockpit in my Audi but I would agree it isn’t a replacement for the1-8 buttons in the BMW. I’ve actually been surprised Audi don’t seem to offer any shortcut functionality.

The virtual cockpit does look super cool and futuristic though!!

My B9 S4 has 1-8 shortcut buttons , however these are nowhere near as useful as the BMW equivalents, because they seem to be only programmable for radio stations, phone numbers and destinations. In my old 435i, I had them set up for changing map views, looking at the trip computer etc. The VC does make things reasonably easy once you get the hang of it, but I still like the extra freedom the BMW system gives you over the Audi.

Which Pirelli winters, specifically? Are you on a square set up, same tyres all round? I am on 19” which are largely OK in North Wales (I am talking road surface conditions, not temperatures), but I may go to 18” next winter.
I am getting consistently 44-45 mpg.

I bought these:

https://shop.bmw.co.uk/INTERSHOP/web/WFS/BMWUK-053...

With Pirelli Sottozero's. My local dealer matched the best UK price, so £1800 fully fitted with tyre-pressures etc vs £2200 list.

Really impressive in the snow/ice we've had since Christmas (we live in rural Scotland and the Beemer is as good as my wife's Freelander 2 on the hilly country roads).

Can't imagine how I'd get another 5mpg, although since most of my daily (50 mile each way) commute is on fast A roads with lots of overtaking opportunities, I'm not #drivingmissdaisy :-)

Let's face it, most BMW are a bit dim, so having the shortcut buttons saves them having to think.

Audi are doing best on the "tech" race at the moment I think, MMI is almost as good as iDrive to use and it supports Android Auto (whereas BMW doesn't, what's up with that?) and virtual cockpit is 100000x better than BMWs latest black dash sticky silver ring dials thing

Thing is your opinion doesn't count when I'm spending my money.

I also prefer analogue dials for the main instruments.

Not sure the 20" are going back on.
Really wouldn't blame you, my wife's current 335d has the 20" wheels and it really ruins the ride, horrible to drive and really thumps over the many holes in the road (also in Scotland). Her last one (company car) had the 18s and it was much more comfortable.

With those 9 shortcuts, yes, fine. But you are limited to those (and 1 would be to turn the screen off, for example - why not a button like my Z4?). But I found once you're outside of those pre-sets, the Audi system works better, eg quickly moving between DAB and USB, then to music library. Calling the wife? I'd just use mfsw button then the voice recognition, keeping both hands on the wheel fwiw- though tbh I tend not to use the phone when driving.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, but for me the BMW set up didn't fall to hand the way the Audi does. Try one and see.
