Interesting, I wonder why bicasts haven't been widely adopted by the automotive industry given that just about ever other "leather" product is actually bicast these days.

Really nice motor. Wish they still made a RWD only version though. I don't want 4wd thanks BMW.

I drove a 4 series the other day. Nothing special. Think it was a 420d in MSport guise. I was staggered at how nice it was. Lovely cars. Quick too for what it was.

Which is interesting as it's the 4WD which actually makes it appealing to me.

To recap: it's nothing special but you were still staggered at how nice it was?

I think he means it wasn't a special model in the 4-series range. A 420d, pretty much a the bottom of the range.

A great car and yes maybe all you need in a modern quick car.

I guess I wish you could have a manual if you so wanted.

But my main gripe is just how dull, inside and out, yes I know you don't always want to stand out from the crowd, but a little colour and flash doesn't go amiss does it?

These N57 3/4 series are fantastic. Mum has loved her 330d xdrive, performance is silly considering the fuel economy/remit of that car. Some amazing deals on them at the moment too...

I have an 335d xDrive M Sport Touring as my daily driver, and love it to bits. I'm 'only' getting around 38mpg, on a 70 mile round trip mix of motorway, A roads and in town, and given the performance on offer I'm more than happy with that. Mine doesn't have the adaptive suspension, and being an xDrive doesn't have the M Sport suspension, so could do with some lowering springs to stiffen things up a bit. On the whole though, it's a refined, quiet and comfy motorway cruiser which has a fair bit of poke when you're in the mood.

from a standing start with launch control I left a 400hp Evo and lots of other so called "fast" cars..
Never had mine side by side (can't be in two places at once after all), but my Evo X with 360hp still feels faster biggrin

I miss my e92 335d. Never have I had such a perfect car. The boost on that thing with a remap was just immense. The fuel consumption was great. The handling was on rails. It looked great. I could get 2 people in the rear seats, the boot was huge. In black it looked menacing. The wheels were to die for and the best bit about it, was the fact that it wasn't an M3.

Only BMW can make a diesel so attractive.

I would love to try the xDrive 435d.

The 4 series is a lovely looking car best of the German mid range coupes by a country mile at the moment, I had the same engine in a 335d xdrive but couldn't get on with it I hated the diesel clatter at idle and part throttle.

There is no doubt they are fast off the line but the xdrive suspension was mush it rolled like a cork in a stormy sea.

I've got a 640d. Similar weight, same engine and gearbox and only rwd and I can't get anywhere near those mpg figures. Do you work for VW? smile

AFAICT Dakota leather *is* probably 'pigmented' leather, not bicast. But it's heavily treated and coated to add an artificial grain.

I'm not aware of *any* cars in this class that use bicast leathers. MB Artico is wholly manmade. So it's vinyl like my dad's 1964 Hillman Minx - surely that is taxi spec.?!

Sorry to spoil this party but a 435d 4X4 is not my idea of fun, it's just boring white goods stuff, albeit at a higher level than Toyota dross! But otherwise very PlayStation.

I bought a 325ti for around £2,000 in November 2014 - naturally aspirated petrol straight 6! So much better than the diseasel 123d I had for over 6 years prior to that!

The 325ti is showing an average of 33.7 on the OBC and with a 63 litre tank the range is pretty good.

Then I got a set of Michelin winter tyres on rims for £180 - lovely!

X-drive is a bit of a delusion - cars have always used 4 wheels to turn corners and for most of the last hundred years to stop, so the tyres are ultimately the limiting factor!

Just waiting for some snow now so I can watch all the X-drives on 18/19 inch summer tyres fall off the road when there is a corner!

I've got a 640d and have averaged 39.8mpg since new (16k miles). I get high 40's on a long run too, and up to 52mpg if I use cruise. Very impressed.

I considered a 435d but didn't like the standard ride height (looks bizarre) and with a few extras was coming up more expensive that the heavily discounted 640d deals, and the 640's are fairly loaded as standard.

Back to a V8 or a 40i engine for me next though...

Having currently got a nice late 325d E92, I'd be interested to know if anyone has had the "clonking" EPAS rack in their 4 series?

As a late car my E92 has an EPAS rack which has had to be replaced at 30k miles....the dealer tech informed me that this problem is extremely common on the new F series 3 and 4

Genuine question as I'm wondering whether to have a 4 next?

Can any owners comment on how intrusive the 435d engine noise is on start-up / until warm and on brisk acceleration? I have a c250 d and it is very agricultural - is the BM any better?
