The H&S ones are good, but they did go through a period of making crap

Miltek's are very good, i don't find them too loud.
H&S made the origional ScoobySport backboxes from Mr Croney back in the day, website shows a very similar looking beastie.

The black colour truly makes this car. We see at once a sport wagon and an SUV. The best attributes of each -- with seemingly none of the downsides of each.

Something like this could look a bit outre or perhaps a bit too youthful in the wrong colour. The black makes a tidy, distinguished package.

I enjoyed seeing this when it was first rolled out on PH. The JDM import story is a nice bit of narrative as well.

I've made no secret of liking this in our recent e-mail exchange. Despite running a fozzy turbo for 6 odd years now I still wonder what the sti would be like. I totally agree with the dilemma encountered on exhaust fronts, I got lucky with mine in as much as I got a second hand item from scoobybits which isn't at all knobish and gives it the tone of voice a scoob should have. But not so much that you can stick a toecap in the end of it.

I'd love to tighten the handling up on mine, but alas with it covering a limited 1000 miles a year mainly on tugboat duties it's hard to justify the cost. A recent MOT suggests I might have to do something about the brakes in the next 12 months, which is a real shame dear.... biggrin

I believe the Impreza and Forester have the same exhaust systems, so if it's a bit of noise you're after a Scoobyworld Racebox back box and unsilenced centre pipe add a nice burble, but with the backbox being so quiet it doesn't become all stupid, you can get both together for around £320 and as their exhaust systems are made by Hayward and Scott they're good quality and a good fit plus it looks almost identical to the Prodrive backbox. Or if you want to spend more then go for a Miltek.
I'm not sure it's that cut and dry, the JDM forester turbo has a slightly different length to a UK car, and other oddities such as headlights and bonnets are completely different. On the second gen I could be wrong but as I've found out it's never that straightforward.

Hi Dan,
Looking good, as for updates, go for milltek Fsti hi flow cat with stainless full system. Then go to Litchfield Imports and speak to Ian regarding remap. Powerstation have closed but they were another good bunch..! on the set up and mapping front.

Regarding brakes 5.1 and drilled 330 brembo discs from scoobyparts pcr100 Sti 01-04 for a Forester Sti 2005 onwards braided hoses . Cosworth street master pads front and rear from Litchfields will sort it.

Ride?? hard yes but if you can get some STI pink springs for the FSTi then go for them over coilovers very progressive and load up very nicely but take the harshness out compared to stock parts. Japan Parts.com 31,046 yen plus shipping.

Big Smiles Steve

Can't recommend Hayward & Scott highly enough. This is the vid that convinced me to get mine.

https://youtu.be/fr_WqTt8hxY

FYI the bigger boot space on the Forester can make some exhausts which sound good on the impreza, feel boomy in the Foz.

Mine is an H&S but they made it just a little quiter so I wouldn't be sent packing by her indoors! It sounds great, still fits tight in its cradle and is blemish free after 4 years. (I love brasso...)

I really like the idea of the Sti. My 2.5 XT with PPP was brilliant, only things I didn't like were the lack of 6th gear (Noisy at 80mph) , the seats and it's thirst. I really regret selling it now.

Couple of questions for Forester Sti Owners:

Ride quality: I don't mind a bit of a hard ride, but don't want to be dodging every drain cover either. For reference I thought the XT was fine, but my Legacy Spec B on 18's was a bit too unforgiving.

Seats: How supportive are they? I found the seats in the XT a bit unsupportive with very poor lumbar adjustment.

Cheers

Firstly, lovely car Dan. I have been wanting one for two years and have recently taken the plunge. Prices increased following your first article (damn you!), presumably due to increased interest...and there seem to be a lot more on the market now! I take delivery of mine on Saturday.

Anyone know where to source a HKS silent that fits the foz? I was shocked by the volume of the standard exhaust!

Please keep us in the loop with mods. I'm unsure as to what car too source bits from to fit the foz. Having a look through forums there doesn't seem to be a definitive opinion. I shall watch keenly!

Also, I have spoken to litchfield and they no longer deal with foresters as they are inundated by more expensive metal. They sent me in the direction of Bob Rawle FYI. Not a bad recommendation I must say.

I have a HKS Silent Hi-Power. It sounds absolutely perfect and allows 400bhp on mine with standard cat in place. No drone and let's the four pot burble really shine. HKS must have sold thousands of their systems for the JDM Foresters so they are exceptional for the car.

May I also suggest you consider a Kartboy short shift upgrade coupled with new Whiteline bushings. Part of the joy of the car is the gearbox... and the Kartboy will really add to the driving experience.

I also run full whiteline ARBs, strut bars (quick release in the rear), bushings etc., Tein coilovers and are all highly recommended before you get to the list of power upgrades... for another day smile

Which front and rear braces, and uppers or lowers? Been looking at Utra Racing lower braces or a Whiteline quick release rear upper brace.

Whiteline f+r rolls bars, Ultra racing f+r upper brace bars. Soon to be fitted with STI lateral links too.

I need to stop reading this as I am seriously tempted to get another one!
Looks like they are really holding their value too, I sold my old one for 10k just over 5 years ago!

Possibly one of the better looking 'family' wagons with PistonHead credentials that is actually affordable.

Glad all well with the FSTi Dan, was beginning to wonder what had happened to it! The level of positivity in the responses to FSTI content whenever it is posted is incredible. I think as a package it just offers so much that few people can argue with it. If only they did a more up to date version... I can see the prices rising in the near- to mid-term. smile

I'll keep you company on the ARB upgrades, I've been meaning to do mine for ages and need to get it sorted before a Ring trip in May.

In the search for more noise the first thing you absolutely must do is the snorkel-ectomy. I think we spoke about this on the last thread. It's free induction noise and arguably an overall improvement to intake derestriction (*citation needed).

I have that mod paired with a GFB variable atmospheric dump valve (can be continuously varied between full atmospheric dump and full recirc) and the Litchfield package (Miltek exhaust, Cosworth panel filter, Ecutek remap). That lot together puts a continuous smile on my face with a nice balance of induction and exhaust, some dump valve "punctuation marks", and the occasional pop and bang on the overrun. smile

Edit: As far as brakes go, just to add info - braided hoses, master cylinder brace, AP racing 6 pot on the front with grooved discs, standard brembos on the back and cosworth pads all round.

When my jdm sf finally gives up the ghost i'll looking to move up to an sti, as mentioned before cobra sport in Sheffield are pretty good, they made me a full system a couple of years ago it's track day friendly spec so not loud at all on idle but when you hit 3k sounds nice and not chavvy,

If you do go to a 22mm rear bar,i'd look at getting the uprated mounts too as they will bend eventually on stock ones, not sure about the sti but the fuel filler neck sits pretty close to the mounting holes and it's right pita to get on so may as well do the whole lot once .

For oem bits can't go wrong with import car parts up in Co Durham, good service & 99% of the time they can get obscure bits as well.

The facelift really does make them ugly.

You said it was mapped ? I have the 2.5XT, I removed all 3 cats and had it mapped on a local RR and ended up with 273bhp and zero lag (I have the smaller turbo as standard)

I'm about to drop it on WRX suspension because mine really doesn't handle as everyone suggests they should and it's nowhere near as pointy as my Classic Impreza.

Please don't leave it at 265bhp. You need to invest in a full H&S system and an open source remap, otherwise you are really missing out! I fitted 24mm rear and 22mm front ARBs on heavy duty mounts.

I get do get some noise from my friends for driving a Subaru - but they soon pipe down after a brief passenger ride!
