So car went in for new water pump, 6 injectors and oil gasket housing couple of weeks ago.

This weekend gone, I have a breakdown. iDrive says car is overheating and to switch off, cuts all power. I park up, open bonnet and engine is cool as you like. Definitely no signs of overheating. Switch engine on and drive off, same again just down the road. This time, wait a few mins, lock and unlock central locking with key fob and start again. Drive home, no problems since.

Further symptoms over the weekend prior to breakdown:
- upon unlocking car made a strange third "beep" that was a lower pitch than the normal 2
- seatbelt handover extender started playing silly buggers going in and out a couple of times

Feels like some kind of electrical gremlin.

Everything I've seen online says waterpump and stat but pump is brand new.

Have checked running temp and it's 105-106 degrees. Coolant full.
Battery at correct voltage.

Any thoughts please?

How have you tested the battery?

Have you checked both battery connections ? The garage may have disconnected the battery when carrying out the water pump repair and not tightened everything back up sufficiently.

Water pump was changed on my E92 335i and the car developed some very strange intermittent symptoms afterwards; lights would go from dipped to full beam for no reason or alarmingly they sometimes would go out altogether. Very scary eek. What reminded me was that it very occasionally would make the odd unlocking beeps you mentioned. One day, at the local Shell garage, it would not unlock at all via remote fob or key in the door. This pointed at no battery power at all; a quick speculative bounce and bump at the back corner where the battery is located and hey presto, the car unlocked.
I checked the battery and the positive connection was only finger tight; once everything had been clamped up properly, all symptoms above didn't return.

Hope its this simple to rectify your faults.........good luck.

It's worth checking the battery with a battery tester. If it's in the early stage of death odd faults can occur.

Tested the battery on my commute today. Mostly 14-15v but every few minutes dropped down below 13 to as low as 12.3v. I don't think that sounds right.

I have contacted dealer and let them know all the issues and that I've copied in BMW UK as it's just becoming a pain.

Should an approved car really be going back almost monthly for work...

Did the voltage variation coincide with anything you were doing in the car ? My weird light symptoms sometimes coincided with using the brakes; the problem was noticeably worse in colder weather.
At night in colder weather, whilst front lights, heated screens & heated seats were all putting demands on the battery. The extra current demand on the battery caused by brake lights, combined with some potential resistance at the battery terminals, could well be enough to confuse the 'smart' battery charger. Low output batteries are well know for causing some very odd faults on E9* series cars.

If your voltage is intermittent, and there are no contributing factors, such as brakes, influencing the demand on the battery, then the alternator and/or voltage regulator could be at fault.

I did notice that it was often happening when braking although not every time and not exclusively.
I await a response from dealer and bmw.
I love the car but was expecting less problems than this.

Ouch - I hope you get it sorted soon!

My Z4C just had an electric water-pump and thermostat. The price made my eyes water - does the 335i have one of those as well?

It does but water pump is brand new...

Am I just silly to think that the car will be as easy to run as previous Jap cars I have had?

So dealer has been ignoring me for a couple of weeks now.

They haven't called or emailed to arrange for warranty work to be carried out. They haven't even called to discuss. Just completely ignored. Also, can't seem to get through to anyone who can help me there on the phone.

Any suggestions?

Do they have a Facebook page? I've found some places take more notice of comments put there. Otherwise, apart from actually driving to the dealership and demanding to see the service manager there's not much more you can do.

I' guessing it's out of warranty? Are there any independent specialists you could take it to rather than muck about with the dealer?

Don't have facebook. I'm tempted to drive down there but it's ridiculous that I would need to...What's the point of buying approved used if this is the service you receive!

4 months. Already been back twice for works I asked them to sort out prior to initial collection. They said they has but clearly that was rubbish.

Apologies if I've missed something, but if it's an AU car requiring warranty work, why haven't you tried a different dealership?

  • Edited, to add, after reading the next post, have you got a copy of the AU report? See if anything was noted. Plus how comprehensive is the 'file' you have on the on the car, do you know what work it's had done in it's life?

If you've only had the car 4 months it might be worth making noises along the lines of rejecting the car?

Even if that's not ultimately what you want to do, it should speed things up a bit.

At 4 months old (to you) even if there are items that the AUC won't cover on the basis it's wear and tear, they are probably issues that were there at purchase and should have been sorted out as part of the preparation for sale of the car.

Finding another dealership close to me that doesn't have terrible reviews is pretty much impossible. Also, the dealership I have purchased from seem to own several in the local vicinity.

Yes I have thought about mentioning rejecting the car.
They supplied it with AU check and the docs showed a fault that was still present when I collected the car - I have made it clear that I wasn't happy with that.

I don't have much in the way of works history file. I have service record but not much further. I have tried to contact previous dealer that did some servicing but they have not responded.

Beginning to lose faith in any kind of aftersales service from BMW.
