I think I need to get myself a little van. Nothing fancy or huge, but should be able to comfortably fit in a large bathtub, haul rubbish to the dump etc.

Don't want anything huge because it's for central london. Really don't even know what to look for. or if there's any kind of amazing features out there.

Don't think I'd like to spend much more than about 5-6k, and something other than white wouldn't be bad!

Vauxhall Astravan could be worth a look, not sure whether it'll fit a bathtub. It's nice though because they're basically a car.

Other than that VW Caddy - again not sure it's long enough for a tub. The next step up would be "proper" vans eg. Transit or things like the Ford Connect, Renault Trafic... you won't find a VW transporter for sensible money they're mad prices

A typical bath is 1.7m long. I had a 2005 Ford Connect which wouldn't fit a tub. The long wheel base version does, just.

If you were taking a bath to the tip, it might have jammed in at an angle.

You really need a Transit sized van for such bath tub luxuries.

Will the local dump/recycling centre let vans in with personal waste or would you need to get a permit each time?

I'm not totally sure, I've never had a problem with a car, but I think they're a bit stricter with vans.

Are you buying the van just to remove bath tubs from your house? How many bathtubs do you need to get rid of here?

Also, as said you'll need a "Propaaa vannn innit guv" for such bulky items. And the local Tip get a bit edgy with vans, if its rented I've just shown them a rental agreement in the past.

My local tip only does vans 'by appointment' & I think you need a permit!

I'm sort of drifting into property refurbishments, so lots of lugging stuff around, bathtub out, bath tub in. Shower enclosures, flat pack kitchens, crates of tiles etc....

I've dallied about with skips before, but unless you fill the bugger the minute you get it, its filled over night by every other scroate around.

You'll need a permit for the tip, it will give you a set amount of trips over a year. Although I think my local tip takes a crumpled £20 note if you run out of trips on your permit...

It varies. Mine don't require any permit for vans. They do however prohibit trade waste of any sort, including from property refurbs. How they enforce this whilst allowing DIY waste I've no idea.

Something that leaves a gap larger than a few inches between the car in front, has working indicators and doesn't sit in lane 3 without ever moving over.

The local tip varies from area to area, these days locally you need permits.

In my experience avoid the VW Caddy at all costs, you'll pay a premium to have one, and mine has been the most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned, actually being more unreliable than a Rover 75 I once had !

I'm struggling to suggest anything other than a petrol Vauxhall (if you can find one), as all the diesels seem to have diesel engine issues !

And if looking at older vehicles check they're LEZ compliant.

As an owner of a trusty Astra van I can confirm a standard 1700x700 bath tub wil fit in the rear and still have the door shut! smile

Toyota Hi-Ace.

If you are planning on doing property refurbishments, you will out grow a small van very quickly.

I wouldn't buy anything else that sized with my own money. It's on flaws are it's lack of pace and dated interior.

^^^ This - IIRC all diesel vans are affected, you'd be better getting a petrol van or an estate / 4x4 / MPV.
