I bet you painted that mud on, didn't you. Cos you know what the Australians say about not coming back in a land Rover.

I have had no issues driving around large areas of Australian outback in my Land Rovers. Done heaps of remote trips and it has got there and back every time:

Cape York. FNQ.

Simpson Desert:

We also owned the Disco for a while

Vic High country:

Its the latest trend in car mods - make it look as muddy as possible, make it stink, give the guy at Detailing World a heart attack.

No, they aren't popular in Africa. Toyotas however are. Funny that.
Toyota's are cheaper to buy and spares can be had from other cars in the Toyota range - hence the popularity.

In South Africa, you will still see plenty of LR's and Jeeps even though they are more costly. Indeed, the Grand Cherokee outsells the Toyota Prado for example. You'll see more Disco's than full fat LC's. That said, you will indeed see more Toyota 4x4's overall, that's true but that's mostly the Hilux bakkie or Land Cruiser Pick Up. Cheaper, obviously, so you'll see more of them about. The LR's and Jeep's exported to Africa are premium vehicles to buy and get spares for in comparison - so most Businesses will opt for the cheaper vehicle. Basic economics.

I had a D3 for 7 years before getting my D4 which is essentially the same but better. Super practical things and very comfy. Image isn't too poncey either which cannot be said these days about the RR. Land Rover run the risk of alienating their original core market but perhaps they have a new one who have no interest in going off road?

Jeeps are interesting things but the styling is a bit weird and wonderful. Land Cruiser has also turned really ugly.

Well said, I've also had a D3 for a number of years but I'm holding off upgrading to either the newer D4/RRS as I just hate the new shapes/body styles. D4 isn't that bad to be fair, but anything post 2010 in my eyes is awful - especially the 2015 Discovery; gone are the large, boxy, menacing looking off-road beasts. Replaced with curvy, barbie-esk awful body styles which look more poncey than practical.

The 2015 Discovery just looks like an Evoque on steroids. The convertible Evoque was the last straw for me - I just detest the direction Land Rover is heading in, they're loosing an image of ruggedness which IMO was what made them so desirable. The new range (post 2010) looks anything but rugged to me.

I can honestly say, that I've been a massive LR fan since I was a kid but I can't stand any of their latest range, I just have 0 desire to own one.

I like the Wrangler as a general purpose hacking machine and it just seems to fit in Arizona where I keep it. Pretty vague on the road but tough off road and parts are cheap. Very uncomfortable on the back seat, so definitely a two seater. I use a Cayenne S for winter and general towing though.
