Tonight on the M1, 50 MPH average speed camera section, cruise control set to 52 MPH and numerous drivers pass me at up to 70 MPH.

This isn't the first time I've witnessed this malarkey but I really need to know, what do they know that I don't?

I sometimes wonder this, can only assume those doing it are leaving the road before the next turn off, but it doesn't always seem that way. I also notice I am always overtaken by lorries too.

Two things spring to mind:

1) Once one driver does it, the others will follow like sheep.

2) For the system to be there it needs to be cost effective. These drivers are paying the bills.

I do wonder this also. Short stretch everyday and there's always some impatient berk who undertakes or overtakes me.

It seems to be a secret that Audi drivers know. Is it something that comes with ownership?

Not legal so have zero interest
Have no idea how "average" speed cameras work
Dont care a jot

What speed are you doing, most lorries will do 55mph if they can going on what I see.

I followed my dad down the motorway a few weeks ago. 5 miles of 50MPH av speed cameras, i stick to 50, he goes off at 60-65. Didn't receive a fine.

It blows my mind to think that there are drivers out there that either simply don't care about the prospect of getting a fine or even more worryingly just don't understand what the restricted average speed section is all about.

Or more intriguingly, do they really know something that most other drivers don't?

Keep to the left and get on with your life biggrin

Was it dark? Perhaps they were doing the "can't see infrared light on camera so it's not on" thing.

Lorries sail through on the limiter as its set lower than the prosecution threshold.

Lorries also have more accurate speedos so their 56mph is a "true" 56mph. The 56mph on a car speedo is more likey to be 53mph or so which makes them look like they are taking the piss.

I just sit at an indicated 55 and haven't had trouble.

I set my cruise to 56mph whenever in a 50 average (going off the "10% +1 = safe" logic) - done many miles in both the M1 and M3 stretches and not had any issues with tickets. I do often wonder what's going on when someone comes past me at 70ish though!

biggrin Because they see it doesn't flash at 55mph, they just blitz through at 70 perhaps thinking it's fine.

Or they think "average" is used to describe its design. silly

Steady 55 on the speedo for me, no ticket ever. Wouldn't risk it any higher personally.

53 on cruise for me. Makes it 51mph via the sat nav. Most people are slower but you get the occasional lunatic. Makes me laugh and the fact they will (theoretically) be fined make me feel good smile

So basically; all of the drivers you see driving at, for example 70 in the average 50 zone, are getting fines/points?

They could be playing camera roulette.
1. Cameras aren't always active
2. Cameras are operated in pairs. What the pairing is is anyone's guess but they don't need to be consecutive and they don't need to be in the same lane.

Or as mentioned they are:
1. Too brain dead to realise
2. Too distracted to realise.
3. Too wealthy to care
4. Too arrogant to care
5. Too stupid to care.
6. Too arrogant to think they will get caught because they didn't last time.

Choose one (or more).

My car showing 50 is nowhere near 50.
GPS tracking shows 50mph as 55mph on the car.

I guess a lot of cars speedos are on the cautious side.

As for 60+..... as above...

i see this most times and couldnt give a fig. i just laugh on the inside that at some point these dippers will receive a fine and maybe some points.

i seem to spot a lot of young asian females in quite new motors giving itf the beans through these sections......not a care in the world.

just think to yourself....sod em.

its the black audi a4 estates that piss me off-their drivers "and powerfully built friend" riding shotgun doing 52mph almost pretending to be the traffic cops. could just be my lively imagination playing tricks though.

I'm seeing this more and more, particularly on the M1 near the Woodside Link works.

Funnily enough on that stretch it's not the usual Audi/BMW repmobiles that are the culprits, but loads of filthy work vans full of angry builders or "Considerably richer than you" types in new Range Rovershehe

Yeah don't get me wrong it does make me laugh to think that the majority will be receiving fines/points but the regularity of this has me convinced that there is a 'secret', possibly local knowledge, that gives these drivers the freedom to do 20 MPH above the monitored limit.

Stupidity etc is more than likely the reality.
