I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has actually been prosecuted for travelling at 57 in a SPECS 50.
Colleague of mine, twice a fortnight apart, approximately 9 pm on a quiet M6. He is what I would call a slow driver, keen to maximise mpg as he travels down south for work. Cruises at 56 mph give or take a couple of mph. Didn't make any adjustment for the 50 mph average speed section.
The schadenfreude is strong there!

It always puzzles me when I see so many people FLYING through the Avg Speed Camera zones at 60+! There must be a lot of cloned registration plates and unlicensed/uninsured drivers out there ....

I stick to an indicated 52-53mph ... which is approx 50mph in real terms.

Yes a friend was caught twice on the A30 near Bodmin, once one way and then the other. It is single lane at the moment though f that makes a difference.
Not suggesting you're telling porkies but it's always 'a friend'.
I wonder if they are too scared to fine everyone as it could cause anarchy , or they don't work much but don't want us to know.
So let's keep this quiet or they'll turn them on,😈

It's not really though is it? It's breaking the law the complete opposite way, in that assault, burglary and theft always have a victim, but speeding very rarely does.
And by your own words, it's still breaking the law.

law
l??/
noun
noun: law; noun: the law

1.
the system of rules which a particular country or community recognizes as regulating the actions of its members and which it may enforce by the imposition of penalties.

So that's how you're justifying it right? I tell you what, when you next get a NIP and end up in court, tell the judge that argument and come back here and tell us how you got on, It would be a good laugh thats for sure.
I dont think his point was to try and justify it - he was simply responding to a.n.other poster earlier who said speeding was akin to those other offences. obviously the law is well defined and you speed you commit the offence. id only put it into the same pigeon hole as burglary etc if youre a complete spoon behind the wheel and kill or injure others. thats a whole other angle.

stealing post it notes or pens from your office is a crime but you still do it and why? nobody gets hurt.

The average cameras on the A13 don't seem to work (Rainham to Tower Bridge).
I was just on there, some guy passed me at 75. I have to say that I'm not too concerned with sticking to the speed limit, but I wouldn't do over 50 on the 40. I'd probably average out at 45. But lots of people don't seem to care. I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket on at stretch and a few do drive well over.

It's much easier on the bike, no rear facing cameras and no plates on the front.

Two things spring to mind:

1) Once one driver does it, the others will follow like sheep.

2) For the system to be there it needs to be cost effective. These drivers are paying the bills.
A work colleague of mine was driving on the M62 past Leeds when they were still doing the smart motorway work there. There were no workmen around and she was getting fed up of sticking to 50mph while people were charging past her so, in sheep following fashion, she got her foot down. A few days later she got an NIP for 62mph.

The innit bruv types, like the one in the white C Class with the illegally spaced registration plates tailgating people out of his way on the M65 tonight, where crash barriers are taking months to replace, will share cars around and no one will admit to being the driver at the time any offence took place. It will always have been someone who is no longer in the country.

The Audi secret is a digital speedometer that I find to be quite accurate against my satnav, so it's easy to sit bang on 50mph, or slightly over if you feel like pushing the boundaries, and cruise past people whose analogue speedometers are probably displaying the same speed as yours.

Been following this thread with interest, in a few weeks I make my annual jaunt from Aberdeen to London, onto Felixstowe and back via M6 and M74 et al.

Thank god for cc. Tell you what though, as you head back north it's so refreshing as the traffic thins out. How you guys drive daily around London etc I don't know. Think they would drive me insane.

Those were the days. Current SPECS appear to be rear facing eek

Only on one section of the A13 though. I can't believe they got it so wrong.

I find that my MB CLS indicated 50 is only about 47 on my Garmin GPS.
If I sit at a GPS 52 then I'm at about 55 MB indicated. Sale past most and in no danger of getting a ticket.
Its amazing how many drop below 45 in a 50 area.

The M60 is the same for the next 2 years. CC set to 50mph whereas the dash indicates 47ish

A perfect example of being weak & responding to pressure from others rather than having the independence & confidence to make your own rules & judgements. One should NEVER allow others to influence your own behaviour, most of us left that thinking behind at school.

I got done on the M6 over Thelwall Viaduct a few years ago (must have been 8 or 9 years now). Midnight, Saturday, zero workers or traffic, but I wasn't concentrating obviously on the cameras. Think I got done for average of 58mph, which I thought was slightly unlucky!

(* off topic, but I believe Nissan 'cherry pick' various engine components at various end of tolerance on their GTR so that, when assembled as a system, the tolerances counteract each other so that the total tolerance is minimised)
More OT - pretty standard practice that I believe. My 1994 Alfa V6 was done the same way, components sorted into 3 tollerance "bands" so they get closer fits for the price of a bit of measuring.

IME, as long as you keep it under 60 indicated, it'll be fine.

I can assure you that the average cameras are active, but looking at the fleet data I have, the lowest speed for them is 59mph.

A quick search of the average cameras data on the M1 that I can recall off the top of my head, would indicate they are all active from Leeds down to Toddington.

And we have easily 2-300 on file for the 3 months... I personally wouldn't risk it over an indicated 56-57.

...but not each and every camera, surely?

I'm mindful of the ones that are illuminated at night, which are clearly (?) active, but assume that the others aren't, at least at night.

I can't really tell from the NIP data that I have - it only shows the location between two junctions, but I know there are more than two cameras along the stretches above as I drive it a couple of times per week. Like many though, CC set at 55 and there is nothing to fear - safely pass those staring at a 50mph speedo needle, but still maintain a clean licence.

Not sure which constabulary covers that stretch, I assume the Met, but we haven't had any recently for the A13, unless it is listed on NIP as the road name. My data on East India Dock Road only shows a load of TfL box junction penalties.
