I used to know someone who ran a fleet of Ford "A" series trucks. He would go to Ford, walk straight past the sales offices and into the accountants office. He'd point out the window to a line of trucks and announce that he would pay £XXXXXXXXX for the whole row of them. The accountants would check their figures and usually OK the deal. No messing about and running to and fro with salesman/ sales managers. Quick and easy deal.
Wow, what a great story.

I wonder if anyone knows any rich people who go in wearing a bin bag with a bag of cash and buys cars after being fobbed off? hehe
hehe
and then drives past the garage the garage that wouldn't give them the time of day....
Waving his willy at them; "you should have seen how gutted the salesmen looked when he saw what I had purchased elsewhere!"

What do you think about Tesla's direct sales model and their fight with the franchise networks, auto dealers association etc?
It's illegal in a lot of states and quite rightly. The consumer gets protection from the franchise system. In a city like Chicago there are 6 JLR dealers, 10 MB, 10 BMW etc.. and they all compete with each other. Punters know that they can get prices from multiple dealers and they have a choice about where to do their business. The Tesla model gives them no choice, they buy from Mr Musk at the price he sets and if they don't like it they don't get a Tesla.

Having said that Tesla is losing about $18k per car right now so their business, let alone the business model, may not be sustainable.

I work in sales, albeit not automotive. I have full responsibility to make the deal and negotiate. I know how low I can go, and there's nothing further my manager would authorise.

I still do the "let me talk to my manager" talk because often, without it, people will still insist I make the call. By going x% of the way myself and then letting them think they're squeezing a little more out of the deal by having me "make the call" I can get a sale which may well have otherwise been lost as they didn't feel I was doing everything I could.

I'd say I use the "ask my boss" routine on a third of deals and it's often the closer as they think they know they can't get any more off.
Charlatan.

How much variation in price is there across the state on, say, an iPhone?

Apple price fixes and gets away with it by bullying retailers. V bad for the consumer.

I'm not quite sure what the problem is with that confused

They are priced by the maker at what they are worth, or in this case, less than they are worth, if they can't afford it they need to buy something else.

In the UK that would be completely unacceptable - clearly you're ripping people off.

I used Car-Wow recently and was very impressed, especially as two local dealers from the same group ended up duking it out. rofl

They were a few hundred dearer than DtD's price though, but DtD wouldn't tell me which dealer they were going to refer me to and wanted me to accept factory lead-time.

Car-Wow dealer got me a car in 2 weeks and when I visited a very nice sales guy still threw in all sorts of stuff that I'd expected they'd wail about. Made me feel a guilty about withdrawing from the PCP.

Why do some dealerships do this? Is it to make you sweat, worry or think they are really weighing up things for you and its agonising them?

Or does it make you think 'sod this I'm not wasting my time here for 20mins that it took for him to see his manager on the last question'.
Its the good guy / bad guy tactic - the salesman wants you to think hes on your side, and hes had to work really hard for a great deal for you.

We had it when we bought the 370Z. Wouldnt have particularly cared only they did it BEFORE we even got a test drive in the car. I went in and suggested maybe there was a better chance of us wanting to buy the car if we got to drive it first, therefore debating the price of our trade in (which we didnt need to trade in to do the deal as i pointed out to him) probably wasnt in their best interest.

We did buy the car eventually, but it was in spite of the salesman, not with the aid of.

Theres a thread on moneysavingexpert running at the minute where theres a guy seems put out by the fact that the dealer is asking significantly more for the car they are selling, than WBAC would pay for it.

How very dare they!

I know one who did that in the 80's on a BMW 323i , it wasn't a bin bag though just a carrier bag.

Yeah of course you do.

Everyone has a mate who has a mate that did it

Or went in and told the sales manager how badly he'd been treated and gave him a 'right proper dressing down!' hehe

Completely true story , the lad worked on the oil rigs ( land based not offshore ) he was one of three local lads who worked for the same company , was refused a test drive at Priory BMW in North Tyneside , went back and paid £9 k in cash.

The name of the dealer shows you how long ago it was.

The same three lads all bought the same trials bikes , Kawasaki Z650's and all ended up with TVR's

Otherwise I've got a very vivid imagination....
