Hi all,

I've been wanting a C63 for a while now. Finally took one out for a test drive the other week and I'm still smiling! Only thing is, the wife would rather I bought a more economical car. I hear the 535D is a good car and offers great performance for a diesel, with great fuel economy.

but... it's still a diesel! I know it sounds not bad with the sound actuator, but the question is: could I enjoy the experience from a 535D or would I always be wishing I bought the C63?

That sound!!! smile

All the best,
Andrew

535d is pretty dull.

The C63 is proper fun.

You can get into a new 340i Sport Touring for around £31k with nav etc. That would be better compromise.

The question here is really how much money you have (or are willing to spend on a car)
Running a c63 will cost substantially more than a 535d. If you need economy, a c63 is not a car for you.

The 535d is a wonderful machine, especially with some small tweaks they are fast saloons. I'm a big fan of diesel myself, I like the grunt and whoosh of a turbo, ease of tuning, and of course being able to afford fuel. I would love to own an AMG. I currently drive a diesel S class, not a cheap car to run per se; but much cheaper than an AMG variant. (I can't afford to run an AMG)

In the real world, the 535d would be almost as quick as a c63, anywhere up to 100mph I'd say. If your looking for the Mercedes, why focus on the 535d? Why not the 335d? or better still, the diesel variant of the car you want, the 320cdi?

In all fairness, if you WANT a c63, with a V8, big brakes, a thirsty motor and a thundering exhaust, get that. Diesels are fast, but they don't make a beautiful sound, and they don't turn heads. If you want a quick car that you can afford to run, a 535d will be more than enough.

I'm not into Super-Saloons or Super-Estates. Passengers and luggage don't often enjoy being bounced around at high speed on concrete suspension.

You can usually get an estate car AND a decent sportscar for the same money, avoiding the inevitable compromise of a car which is trying to do everything at once.

Understand what you're trying to say here but a 535d is nowhere near as quick as a C63, nor does it feel as quick. And yes I've driven both.

Indeed.

535d does 100mph in around 13 seconds. The C63 does the same in under 10.

Different league in terms of performance.

I've had a number of big fast estates, mostly V8 Audi's. My mileage started to significantly increase through work so I went to a 535d and although quick, it's not really quick, even with a remap, it's certainly not economical (especially with a remap) and at the end of the day, it's still a diesel and sounds like s diesel. You'll not want to drop the windows down when going through a tunnel.
I had mine less than 4 months and got rid, hated it as it's neither fast or frugal.

Personal preference was if you want something fast, get something that's designed for it. If you NEED the economy, get a decent 2.0tdi estate.

I have a 535d F10 M Sport, having come out of a B7 RS4 Avant.

It's an incredible car. Very very fast, and very very cheap to run. I bought new trwo years ago, now at 60k miles and aside from two sets of tyres I have not had to spend one penny on it (came with the service pack).

A C63 is of course a much more desireable car, but it will use three times the fuel, cost double at least to insure, £500+ a year road tax and will eat tyres and brakes like a dog eats hot chips (my RS4 had new front pads and discs and it was £2k).

A 535d is all the car you ever need. I just miss the noise of my RS4.

If you want a quick diesel then try the A6 Avant BiTurbo: 310 bhp, 480 lb/ft, 0-60 in 5.3 and 44 mpg.

I don't think there's much doubt you'll enjoy the C63 more, the question is what your wife and wallet will think! I'm not sure Pistonheads can answer that one...

How many miles will the car be doing? Assuming 10k miles, 40mpg for the BMW and 15mpg for the Merc, that's about £2k a year saved in fuel, hardly bank breaking for those types of car, if you can't afford an extra £2k then you can't really afford the car. Servicing and consumables on the other hand wink

Great replies! thanks all!

I must admit, my heart is going with the C63. I was laughing when I drove it. that sound was intoxicating! I drive a 2.0 Audi TDi now (chipped) and it bores me rigid.

I think I'll check out the 535D out of curiosity, but I agree with the comments that it's still a diesel and won't make you want to wind down the windows through a tunnel. I know it will cost more in fuel, I tend to do around 10k a year but 2.5k of those comes from driving to France in the summer laden with roofbox etc.. I'm not to bothered by the fuel consumption (the wife is though smile ) but the small tank could be a pain!

I'm aware it eats rear tyres, but so does my Audi on fronts right now. why do the brakes wear so quickly? Is it because they are drilled or just simply because people really hammer them?

I think sensible = 535D, Fun = C63.

Can you get a 535i Touring?

Surely then; slightly more reasonable than the C63 in terms of economy, fab 6-cyl soundtrack?

Not as fast, obviously, but won't bore you to tears like a diesel?

It is just a really, really strange choice of cars, it makes no sense.

What age and price point re you looking at?

Cash or finance?

I had the 535d and it was OK, but nothing more, I replaced it with an S4 Avant and hated it, worse than the 535d in every respect apart from noise, so swapped that for the 335i. The 335i was a really good compromise, but after a few weeks realised it was no M3 so went back to an M3 again.

The C63 Estate was amazing though, and I have nearly pulled the trigger on one twice.

I just missed out on a 13 plate estate at Mercedes a few weeks back. It was £31k with 2 years free servicing and interest free finance. However, I got finance quotes from Lombard, because they had much better residuals, was only around £350 a month with £3k down. Needed to be worth £18k in 3 years time with 60k mile on it. No problem.

C63 will cost you £48 a week in fuel doing 10k miles a year, 535d will cost you around £25 a week.

A £30k 535d Touring will loose around £12k in 3 years and 30k miles, where as the C63 will loose around £10k.

If you can buy approved you will get 2 years free servicing on the C63 and you can talk them into a second years warranty too.

So do your sums carefully, you may find that that C63 is the cheaper car to own if you buy it right.

Proper man maths. wink

535D is very accomplished but I found it as boring as **** and never felt or seemed as fast as it should be. I'm glad it's gone after 3 Years tbh

Probably the last chance to own a NA V8, plenty of time to own a sensible (boring) diesel & life is short.

I'd love to own a C63 estate at some point but while 996 prices seem to be rising I'm staying put!
