I love sleepers but get annoyed with threads on sleepers as people insist on offering up examples of cars that are clearly pretty quick to begin with, but have been made a bit quicker. Regular as clockwork, the very first post offers up a Golf R32. What next, a standard looking R34 Skyline with the boost whacked up? And no 'sleeper' thread is complete without some limited-edition variant of an Impreza that's 0.5 seconds quicker to 60 than a normal STI.
Absolutely this. This is the closest I've ever had, and I'd argue not strictly a sleeper. A good bit over 300whp with a low ratio 'box. Utterly ridiculous once you got going.
My 9000 at stage 2 with 240-250bhp
Old 9000 with 256bhp
And my mates old 9000 in beige with 280bhp

Most people fail to understand what a real sleeper car is, the nova and the civic are good examples.
Anything that is sporty straight from the factory does not count - a sleeper should be a base model, small exhaust, small wheels, basic seats etc.
failing to understand your view is not falling to understand what a sleeper is as it is widely defined as this thread showsAnything that is sporty straight from the factory does not count - a sleeper should be a base model, small exhaust, small wheels, basic seats etc.

No (ZERO) room in there for S-Charges/turbos etc and a re-map is pointless really.
Decat and Exhaust to finish.
It is not a traffic light drag racer in any way but there very few cars (talking a few really top priced jobs) that can keep up round the twisty stuff without them frightening themselves to death.
I cannot be bothered racing at lights....boring to the extreme
I can drive in comfort (Citroen) as it retains the magic carpet ride and preserve my fillings. Most of those types of cars (hard springs ect) just end up in a ditch/hedge at the first corner anyway and for me driving is NOT a drag race its about driving on real roads.
SC-Car limits roll to max 5cm (ecu detects speed/corner forces etc), so dead flat in corners and standard Hydro-Active (2x modes) at all other times, so 3x suspensions modes

So if you had to bet your house against 1 car in a Traffic Light GP which would you choose to run against?
Personally? I'd happily run against any of the above, but I'd be most worried about the Volvo, but then I do drive a surprising old van with silly pink badges all over it. The Spruce goose said:
No.... Not even close. Both have bodykits, sporty wheels and agressive styling. Neither are remotely Q-car - the powerful one is just a generic sporty car, the gutless one is a sheep in wolf's clothing. The very opposite of what is supposed to be discussed in this thread.Gtom said:
My car will be once finished. It's a mk3 golf vr6 with a 1.8t conversion. I'm swapping the bumpers for un-painted ones, the wheels for Audi pepper pots (painted black the look look me steels) with a plump tyre and de badging it. It's got large port head, emerald ecu, 3" downpipe and exhaust and I also will be fittings a k04 turbo. It should be good for 250+bhp.
Sounds good, however, in an age where even white vans have alloy wheels, black wheels will look out of place, suspicious even. IMHO of course.i dont think a built not bought car really falls into the true definition of a sleeper. arent sleepers like cars straight from their factory that look fairly bland or innocuous but have have sting in the tail rather than something low spec thats been modded?
anyone can build a car that has those characteristics. i could buy a Mk4 fiesta and stuff a big YB engine into it but im sorry thats not a true sleeper despite the surprises it might cause.
The Volvo T5 was a good example in its day.

= SleeperNice Volvo 240 here with added turbo. If it wasn't so far away I'd go and have a poke around it.

Some good examples of sleepers on this thread, as some have already mentioned.
BUT, for those suggesting a car from the FACTORY, that looks like a normal factory car, with a FACTORY engine....that is a Q car.
the Metro, the Nova, the Civic,...they're sleepers because, they look like a cheap nasty car but they're much faster than you would expect even the fastest one to be.
Q cars are bought
Sleepers are built
So you decide a definition for yourself and then assume it's the accepted standard?BUT, for those suggesting a car from the FACTORY, that looks like a normal factory car, with a FACTORY engine....that is a Q car.
