A friend of mine bought an old yorkshire water Astra Van 1.6lpg and fit an Astra VXR engine. That was quite a sleeper, looked completely standard except for some lowering springs.

A Mitsubishi Galant VR4 is what you want OP. Can't find any for sale atm after a quick search however. Really like the looks of them, especially in estate form. If I ever find a good one, i'm going to keep it forever!

A sleeper is a car that doesn't get noticed when it's in traffic or parked up. No Recaros, no fat exhausts, nothing flashy, no big-engine-inside badges. It was never pretty or stylish in its day, nor since.

It's the car that turn up to a PH meet, and as it trundles in, everybody looks away and hopes it'll go park in the overflow spaces, not where the goateed-types have parked their just-detailed bank-statements-on-wheels.

It will always be completely overlooked until it does it's thing on the open road. That pre-facelift W124 with OM606 in Readers' Cars perhaps fits the bill. So do the Astra and Citroen.

A hearing-aid beige 190E with 5.6 V8 would be my perfect sleeper.

Yeah, Galant VR4s are real sleepers! laugh

A sleeper doesn't have to be rough looking - it can be a nice looking clean car, but one that looks basic and slow.

Here is an older Mercedes that works.

AX was great fun, took it down to trax one year and surprised a few nice cars on the way down. Highlight for me was 2 chavs in their standard issue halfords rover, they were vocally jeering me at the lights which in all fairness was the exact appearance i was looking for - a shed of an ax. I let them get ahead before utterly destroying their pride, like most people they were just astonished when we got to the next set of lights.

Sadly it wasn't very reliable, though they were build errors more than robustness issues and i learnt a lot from it. i ended up breaking it and buying a Porsche. It just wasn't a feel good car and i was pouring money into it - even a little shed like that cost me around 15k, though i could do it for a lot less if i did it again. I'd have another one if i had room.

It handled like a go kart and stopped well enough, 4 pot brakes, saxo running gear etc.

Pull up next to one of these in a TVR only to have it sit on your bumper as you floor it, thats when you know what a sleeper is.

I don't know what it was running but it was a bit nippy.

"A sleeper (US English) or Q-car (British English) is a car that has high performance and an unassuming exterior.[1][2][3] Sleeper cars are so called because their exterior looks little or no different from a standard or economy-class car." All according to Wikipedia.

What did I recommend? A car that looks no different than the rest of the range. Tell me again how I don't understand what a sleeper is.

Depends how rusty it is I suppose. I remember my uncle's Mirafiori having holes in it I could fit my hand through.

Some good examples of sleepers on this thread, as some have already mentioned.

BUT, for those suggesting a car from the FACTORY, that looks like a normal factory car, with a FACTORY engine....that is a Q car.

the Metro, the Nova, the Civic,...they're sleepers because, they look like a cheap nasty car but they're much faster than you would expect even the fastest one to be.

Q cars are bought
Sleepers are built

My car will be once finished. It's a mk3 golf vr6 with a 1.8t conversion. I'm swapping the bumpers for un-painted ones, the wheels for Audi pepper pots (painted black the look look me steels) with a plump tyre and de badging it. It's got large port head, emerald ecu, 3" downpipe and exhaust and I also will be fittings a k04 turbo. It should be good for 250+bhp.

besides a few minor differences they look very similar, so sleeper/q car yes.
